Shorewomen Drop Pair of Games in Florida

Shorewomen Fall to St. Joseph's (ME), Richard Stockton

FORT MYERS, FL -- The Washington College softball team dropped a pair of games this afternoon at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The Shorewomen lost their first game of the day to St. Joseph's (ME), 9-1, in six innings, and fell to Richard Stockton, 6-2, in their second game.

In Washington's first game of the day, St. Joseph's took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Emily Leverone hit an RBI double to left center and later scored on an error. The Shorewomen got a run back in the top of the second when junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) scored a sacrifice fly to left field in foul territory by sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg). In the fourth inning, Jill Howard hit an RBI single and Alyssa Dunn scored on an error to give the Monks a 4-1 lead. St. Joseph's tacked on two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Leverone and Dunn. In the sixth, Jordan VanRosendael scored on an error, Leverone hit an RBI double, and Dunn hit a single to make it 9-1, ending the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Leverone finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored for the Monks. Danyelle Shufelt, Dunn, and Howard each had two hits. Rae-Marie Copan got the win for St. Joseph's, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks while striking out four batters in six innings.

Snover, junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), and sophomore Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) each went 2-for-3 in the loss for the Shorewomen.

Against Richard Stockton, the Shorewomen scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Carbutt and freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur). The Ospreys evened the score in the top of the third as Jessica Goncalves scored on an error and Katelyn Derewecki scored on a wild pitch. Stockton took the lead in the top of the fourth when Meaghan Ireland walked with the bases loaded. The Ospreys added a fourth run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Danielle Kohen, a fifth run in the sixth on an RBI single by Danielle Accardi, and their sixth and final run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Stephanie Darrow.

Ally Roma, and Goncalves each had two hits in the win for the Ospreys. Michelle Pietrocola got the win in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters in seven innings.  Dockrill went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored to lead the Shorewomen.

The Shorewomen (3-7) continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic tomorrow when they take on St. Lawrence at 9:00 a.m. and Hamilton at 11:00 a.m.
