Box Score 2 Washington Defeats Lasell, Saint Mary's (IN)
FORT MYERS, FL -- The Washington College softball team finished its stay at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL, with a pair of wins tonight. The Shorewomen (6-8) knocked out 13 hits in a 12-3 six-inning win over Lasell College in their first game of the night, and had 12 hits in a 7-5 win over Saint Mary's (IN) College in their second game.
The Shorewomen took a quick 5-0 lead against Lasell in the top of the first inning as junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park), sophomore Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright), and freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) all hit RBI singles and Walter and Kyle Nottingham scored on an error.
An RBI double by junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) in the second and an RBI single by sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) in the third increased the lead to 7-0. Glascock had another RBI single in the top of the fifth and scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to make it 9-0.
Lasell scored three times in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Santina Antoshak and Candace Hankard and a sacrifice fly by Talia DeChiara.
The Shorewomen scored three times in the top of the sixth as Carbutt scored on a wild pitch, Kyle Nottingham drove in Snover on a squeeze play, and freshman Macauley Brooks (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Carbutt finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Snover and Walter each went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while Kyle Nottingham was 2-for-3 with two RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases, while Glascock went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
Junior Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) picked up the win for the Shorewomen, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks in four innings. Brooks pitched the final two innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits and no walks. Kerrie Starkey went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the loss for Lasell.
The Shorewomen took a 2-0 lead on Saint Mary's on RBI singles by Walter and Kylie Nottingham in the bottom of the first. The Belles got a run back in the top of the third on an RBI single by Kristen Nelson. Saint Mary's went in front in the top of the fourth when Kate Mitchell scored on an error and Emily Sherwood scored on a wild pitch to give the Belles a 3-2 lead.
Washington freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) knotted the score at 3-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. Carbutt hit an RBI single two batters later to put the Shorewomen back in front, 4-3. The Shorewomen tacked on their fifth run in the bottom of the fifth on a squeeze bunt single by Glascock.
Saint Mary's pulled even again in the top of the sixth as Angela Gillis scored on an error and Lauren Enayati hit an RBI single. Walter hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to put Washington back in front, 7-5.
Dockrill went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for the Shorewomen in the win, while Walter was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Kylie Nottingham was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Hilary Rosenberg (Sweetwater, NJ/Oakcrest) was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Walter got the win in the circle in relief, retiring all five batters she faced in the final inning and two-thirds.
Nelson, Hayley Bojorquez, Chrissy Porter, and Mitchell each had two hits in the loss for the Belles.
The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with their home opener, a 3:00 p.m. double-header against Wesley.
