Papen, Ellison Post Wins in Singles and Doubles
HAVERFORD, PA -- Host Haverford College, the 15th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, posted a 6-3 Centennial Conference men's tennis win over visiting Washington College, the region's 12th-ranked team, this afternoon inside Alumni Field House. The Fords improved to 3-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Shoremen fell to 3-3 and 1-1.
The Shoremen won at the top spot in doubles as junior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and junior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) were 8-3 winners over Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himmelstein. The Fords won at the other two doubles spots, however, to take a 2-1 lead. Matthew Cebul and Natty Sergay beat senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and freshman Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]), 8-5, at No. 2 and Will Garrett and Hailiu Yang defeated junior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) xxx junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett), 8-3, at No. 3.
In singles, Caulfield, the region's 12th-ranked singles player, topped Cranford, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1. Papen picked up a win for the Shoremen at No. 2, besting Yang, 6-7(6), 6-3, 10-4, at No. 2. Andy Dougherty beat Lisco, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3. The Shoremen's other singles win came at No. 4 as Sergary retired with an injury after Ellison held a 2-0 lead in the first set. Matt Romei downed WC freshman Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township), 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 and Jacob Weisenthal beat Menzione, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 6 to round out singles.
The Shoremen return to action Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. match at Division I Loyola University.
