Box Score 2 Glascock With Career-High Six RBI Against Emory & Henry
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Washington College softball team opened the 2011 season by splitting a pair of games at the Beach Blast Tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex. The Shorewomen topped Emory & Henry (1-1), 14-2, in the first game of the day, while falling to Roanoke (5-3) in the nightcap, 9-6.
The 14 runs in the win over Emory & Henry is the most ever by the Shorewomen in a season opener. The previous high was 13 against Davis & Elkins in 2005.
In the top of the first inning the Shorewomen scored twice to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) plated her sister, sophomore Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) on a hit by pitch. Junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) made it 2-0 when she scored on a single by sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg).
WC scored five times in the top of the second to increase the lead to 7-0. Carbutt drove in freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) to make it 3-0 WC. Carbutt scores on a base hit by freshman Julia Erbe (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) to increase the lead to 4-0. Glascock chased Erbe and junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) with a two-run single and junior Kristine Cunningham (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) brought home Glascock on an RBI hit to cap the scoring.
The Wasps got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home to cut the lead to 7-2.
The Shorewomen added two more runs in the top of the sixth and added five more in the seventh to provide the final margin. Glascock highlighted the five-run seventh with a two-run single.
Glascock had a career-high five RBI and tied her career-best with three hits in the win. Carbutt went 4-for-5 with a double and RBI. She tied her personal best with four hits. Snover went 2-for-5 with two RBI. The Shorewomen pounded out 13 hits in the win. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) picked up the win in the opener as she struck out three and scattered two hits in five innings. Junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) tossed the last two innings and struck out three.
In the second game, Roanoke jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lisa Scruggs doubled in Leona Rainey to make it 1-0 and would score on a WC fielding error. The Maroons added a run in the second when Scruggs singled in Katherine Kouri to take a 3-0 lead.
Roanoke increased the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth with four runs. Scruggs doubled in Rainey and Alea Bier to make it 5-0. Scruggs scored on a single by Hollee Warlitner to make it 6-0. Warlitner scored on a Washington fielding error to close out the scoring in the inning. The Shorewomen got onto the board in the bottom of the fourth when Shaelan Nottingham scored on a Snover single to cut it to 7-1.
Freshman Hilary Rosenberg (Sweetwater, NJ/Oakcrest) tripled in the bottom of the fifth and scored on a Dockrill single to cut the Roanoke lead to 7-2.
The Maroons added two runs in the top of the sixth to make it 9-2. Warlitner scored on a single by Sara Caudle. The second run of the inning was capped on a Janie Holmes home run.
The Shorewomen got two in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to cut it to 9-6. In the sixth, Kylie Nottingham drove in Snover and Glascock plated Kylie Nottingham, both coming on RBI singles. In the seventh, Carbutt knocked in two on a double that scored Dockrill and Shaelan Nottingham to provide the final margin.
Abigail Rexrode got the win in the circle for Roanoke as she tossed a complete game to get the victory.
For Washington, Walter took the loss in the circle and falls to 1-1. She gave up seven runs, five earned, five hits and struck out one hitter in four innings. Kimme allowed two unearned runs and fanned three as she hurled the last three frames.
Dockrill, Shaelan Nottingham and Snover all had two hits in the game. Shaelan Nottingham also scored twice for the Shorewomen.
Washington returns to action tomorrow against Virginia-Wise at 12:00 p.m. and Christopher Newport at 4:00 p.m. in the second and final day of the Beach Blast Tournament.
