Ellison, Menzione Notch Singles Wins for WC in Loss

LANCASTER, PA -- Host Franklin  & Marshall College won a battle of regionally-ranked teams by defeating visiting Washington College, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon in Lancaster, PA. The Diplomats, who entered the match ranked 13th in the Atlantic South, improved to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Shoremen, who entered the match ranked 12th, fell to 7-5 and 4-2.

The Diplomats took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as Ross Silverberg and William MacArthur downed WC freshmen Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and Nicolas Campisi (Santa Rosa, Argentina/Highland [UT]), 8-1, at No. 1, while Tommy Weibye and Doug Silverstein edged juniors Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg), 9-8(3), at No. 2. The Shoremen won at No. 3 where senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) topped Paul Salierno and Samuel Stone, 8-4.

In singles, Silverberg beat Cranford, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1, MacArthur out-dueled Papen, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2, Weibye beat Cywinski, 6-0, 6-1, and Eric Rouff downed freshman Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township), 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5 to account for the Diplomats' four wins.  The Shoremen won at No. 4, where Ellison defeated Silverstein, 7-5, 6-4, and at No. 6, where Menzione bested Peter Bookman, 7-5, 6-3.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a Centennial Conference match at Gettysburg.
