Box Score 2 Dockrill Goes 4-For-4 In Game One
GETTYSBURG, PA – Visiting Washington College and host Gettysburg College split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Bobby Jones Field. The Shorewomen held off the Bullets in game one by a 5-3 score, while Gettysburg took game two, 5-0. The Shorewomen are now 18-16 overall and 9-5 in the conference this season, while the Bullets are now to 15-13 and 5-5 respectively on the year.
In game one, Washington scored two times in the top of the first inning taking advantage of two fielding errors by the Bullets to grab a quick 2-0 lead. Freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) scored on a fielding error for the first run and junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) scored on a bases loaded walk to senior Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) for second run of the frame.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Shorewomen tacked on a three-spot to grab a 5-0 lead.
Carbutt smacked a two-run double to right-center to put WC up 4-0 and the next hitter, freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) plated Carbutt on a two-bagger to left field to give the guests a five-run cushion.
Gettysburg would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Maggie McGuire scored on an RBI single through the right side by Caitlin Bay to cut the lead to 5-1. The Bullets reduced the lead to 5-2 when Adrienne Rahs scored on a double play.
In the last of the seventh the Bullets would load the bases with two outs. Katie Lang would score on a wild pitch to cut the WC lead to 5-3 and a walk to Rahs re-loaded the bases with Maguire coming up to the plate. Maguire hit a hot shot to third base that junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) was able to grab it on a short hop. Snover touched the bag at third to get the force out and end the first game with WC holding on for a two-run victory.
For WC in the opener, Dockrill went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish and scored two runs. She had four of the team's eight hits in game one. Carbutt also scored twice and delivered two RBI in the win. In the circle, junior Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) recorded the win and is now 3-3 on the year. She went 6 2/3 innings, scattered seven hits and gave up three runs in recording the victory. Junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got the last out of the game to tally her second save of the season.
Sam Bader and Joy Hallfors went 2-for-2 and 2-for-4 respectively for the hosts, while Bay recorded two RBI. In the circle, Taylor Snyder took the loss and drops to 7-7. She tossed the first two innings before giving way to Lanie Parr for the final five innings. Snyder gave up the first two runs, both unearned, while Parr gave up the last three runs. Parr struck out six for the Bullets.
In game two, the Bullets scored twice in the last of the second to take a 2-0 lead on an RBI single to left field by Bay that allowed Maguire to touch home and a run scoring double off the bat of Megan Lott that sent in Bay.
Gettysburg added a run in the third on a bases loaded walk to Bay that allowed Hallfors to score and gave the hosts a three-run lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bullets made it 4-0 when Lott scored on a fielding error and Catrina DelGais scored on a single to left field by Maguire to make it 5-0 and provided the final margin.
Lott and Maguire each had two hits, a run scored and an RBI in the game two win for Gettysburg, while Bay plated a pair of teammates. The Bullets had seven hits in game two. In the circle, Parr tossed a complete game four-hit shutout to improve 8-6 on the year. She struck out four and walked one.
Carbutt had two hits for Washington in the second contest. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) took the loss pitching wise and drops to 7-8. She went the first four innings and gave up six hits and all five runs. The loss in game two also snapped a five-game winning streak for Washington.
Washington returns to action on Tuesday with its final conference double-header of the season at Swarthmore. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
