Shoremen Post Wins at Gettysburg, York
YORK, PA -- The Washington College men's tennis team won a pair of road matches today. The Shoremen, who are ranked 13th in the Atlantic South region, opened the day by clinching a spot in the five-team Centennial Conference Tournament with a 6-3 win at Gettysburg. Washington (9-5, 5-2 Centennial) then added an 8-1 non-conference victory at York (PA) College.
Against Gettysburg, the Shoremen won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) blanked Chris Curran and Sebastian Rodriguez, 8-0, at No. 1, while junior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) topped Mike McLaughlin and Johnny Nelson, 9-8(4) at No. 3. Will Brinks and Tom Gosnell won for Gettysburg at No. 2, downing freshman Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Nicolas Campisi (Santa Rosa, Argentina/Highland [UT]), 8-1.
In singles, Cranford, the region's 19th-ranked player, won at No. 1 for the Shoremen, who also won at the bottom three spots. Cranford downed Curran, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4, Ellison defeated Rodgriguez, 6-2, 6-1. Campisi beat Brinks, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5, while Menzione shut out Nelson, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. Gettysburg won at No. 2 as McLaughlin outlasted Papen, 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8, and at No. 3 where Gosnell bested junior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), 6-1, 6-0.
The Shoremen swept doubles in the win at York. Papen and Ellison defeated Travis Klein and Colin Jones, 8-4, at No. 1. Cranford and Menzione played at No. 2 and defeated Philip Myers and James Villari, 8-3, whie Lisco and freshman Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) bested Justin Hostetter and Ryan Harvey, 8-5, at No. 3.
Cranford blanked Klein, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while Papen downed Harvey, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. Jones picked up York's lone point with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Lisco at No. 3. Ellison topped Myers, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4, while Campisi bested Nathaniel Hoskins, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8, at No. 5. Menzione beat Hostetter, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Swarthmore.
