Shorewomen Win Game One In 10 Innings

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College split a softball double-header against Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference softball action at Washington College Softball Field.  The Shorewomen are now 12-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the Mules are now 13-8 and 3-1 respectively.

Washington struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning in game one.  Freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) doubled to left field to lead off the game and scored on a two-bagger to right-center off the bat of junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first.  Dockrill singled to center in the bottom of the second to chase home freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to put the hosts up by a 2-0 score.

Muhlenberg would take a 3-2 lead in the top of the third when Ashley Brewer launched a three-run home run over the centerfield fence on an 0-2 pitch with two away.

Washington tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single up the middle by senior Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) that sent home sophomore Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to level the contest at 3-3.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Carbutt was placed on second base per the international tie-breaker rule.  She moved to third base on a groundout and scored on a walk-off base hit to left field by freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to give the Shorewomen the victory in game one.

Kylie Nottingham went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Dockrill went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI in game one.  In the circle, junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got the win and is now 5-3 on the season.  She tossed the final seven innings of the game for WC and did not allow a run.  Kimme struck out two and allowed only five hits.

For the Mules, Brewer was 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Kelly Kline also had two hits.  Brewer took the loss pitching wise, tossing 9.2 innings in going the distance.  She allowed four runs, three of them earned.  Brewer fanned seven and gave up nine hits.

In game two, the Mules took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Erica Wenzel hit a two-run home run to left-center.  Muhlenberg made it 3-0 in the top of the third when Wenzel stole home on a double steal.  Washington got a run back in the bottom of the third to cut it to 3-1 when Kylie Nottingham drove in junior Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) on a sacrifice fly.

The Mules scored four times in the top of the fourth to grab a 7-1 lead.  Colleen O'Donnell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Shelby Smith to make it 4-1.  Devon Barber walked in the next at-bat and that scored Brittany Blohm to increase the lead to four runs.  Wenzel walked to send home Chelsea Benjamin to make it 6-1.  Brewer capped the scoring by walking herself to score O'Donnell and make it 7-1.

Washington scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 7-4.  Sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) drove in junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) on a walk and two hitters later, Dockrill hit a two-run double down the left field line to score sophomore Kaitlin Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) and Kylie Nottingham.  But the Shorewomen could draw no closer and the Mules earned the split.

For the Mules in game two, Wenzel went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Angie Sisco got the win in the circle and is now 4-4 on the year.
For the Shorewomen in game two, Dockrill was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Snover was 2-for-4.  Piasecki took the loss in the circle and drops to 1-3.

The Shorewomen are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Salisbury.  First pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
