#17 Salisbury Downs Washington Twice

Carbutt With A Hit In Both Ends Of The Doubleheader

SALISBURY, MD – Host #17 Salisbury recorded a pair of victories over its visiting Eastern Shore rival, Washington College on Sunday afternoon in non-conference softball action at SU Softball Field.  The Sea Gulls (25-4) won 9-0 in five innings in game one and downed the Shorewomen (12-12) by a 5-0 score in game two to take both ends of the doubleheader.

In the first game, the Sea Gulls scored three times in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of an RBI single to left field by Hannah Mills and a two-run single to left-center off the bay of Casey Zaino.  Both run scoring hits came with two outs. 

In the bottom of the third, Mills cranked a home run to left-center to lead off the inning to give the hosts a four-run lead.  Harley Hill and Lindsay McCabe would both tack on two-run two-out singles to push the Salisbury lead to 8-0.

Taylor Webb delivered an RBI triple to left field to make it 9-0 and close out the scoring in the last of the fourth.

Zaino was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Salisbury attack in game one, while Hill, McCabe and Mills all had two hits and two RBI.  Lindsay Brown also had two hits, while Mills and Sarah Alspaugh scored twice.  In the circle, Erika Brittingham had the win and struck out nine in four innings to improve to 16-3 on the year.  Her and Kathryn Larson combined on a one-hitter.

For Washington, sophomore pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) took the loss and drops to 6-5. Junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) recorded a double in the top of the fourth inning.

In the second game, the Sea Gulls scored first in the bottom of the third inning when Hill scored on an illegal pitch to put the hosts up 1-0.  Hill had reached on a one-out double to right field and took third base on a groundout.

In the bottom of the sixth, Salisbury tacked on three runs to take a 4-0 lead.  Alspaugh scored on a fielding error to make it 2-0 and Zaino ripped a two-run double to left to give the hosts a four-run cushion.  Zaino scored on a base hit to center by Carly Read to make it 5-0 and close out the scoring.

Kelly Leary got the win in the second game as she tossed a four-hit shutout and striking out 10 to improve to 9-1 on the year.  At the plate, Read and McCabe both had two hits with Zaino driving home two teammates.

Junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) took the loss and falls to 5-4 on the year.  She allowed just three earned runs in tossing her fourth complete game of the year.  Kimme allowed eight hits, did not walk a batter and punched out three Sea Gulls.  Carbutt had one Washington's four hits and tallied hits in both ends of the two-fer for the visitors.

The Shorewomen return to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday afternoon against visiting Ursinus at Washington College Softball Field.  First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
