Olszewski Tallies Four Hits In Two Games

CARLISLE, PA – The Washington College softball team had its 2011 season come to an end in the 2011 Centennial Conference Softball Tournament hosted by top seed Dickinson.  The second seeded Shorewomen fell to third-seed Muhlenberg, 8-4, in the first game of the day and dropped a 3-2 score to fourth-seed Ursinus in the squad's second game of the day at Dickinson Park.  Washington concludes its season at 21-21.  The 21 wins ties the program's high for wins in a season with the 1997 squad that finished 21-9-1.

Against Muhlenberg (23-15) in game one, the Mules got on the board in the top of the first when Ashley Brewer singled to left field with one out and scored Devon Barber.  In the top of the second, a two-out infield single to shortstop by Barber scored Chelsea Benjamin

In the top of the fourth, Muhlenberg scored six times to take an 8-0 lead.  Wenzel would drive in the first two runs on a double to give the Mules a 4-0 lead.  Brittany Blohm doubled down the right field line to score two more and make it 6-0.  Blohm would score on a throwing error to make it 7-0 and Shelby Smith crossed home on a wild pitch for the final run of the top half of the fourth to make it 8-0.

Washington scored three times in the bottom of the fourth.  Sophomore Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) singled to left to score junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) for the Shorewomen's first run.  Freshman Brooke Olszewski (Bel Air, MD/Patterson Mill) singled to left to score freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) and Walter.

Freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) scored on an infield single to short by Kylie Nottingham with two outs in the last of the fifth to cut the Muhlenberg lead to 8-4.

Washington loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Muhlenberg pitcher Ashley Brewer got Dockrill to pop up to Jess Kasza at shortstop for the second out on the infield fly rule and got sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) to ground out to Wenzel at second to escape the jam.

Muhlenberg's Barber was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Blohm went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run.  Totaling two hits for the Mules were Brewer, Kasza and Benjamin, while Wenzel drove in a pair.  Muhlenberg tallied 16 hits in the game.  Brewer got the win pitching wise and is now 11-6.  She went the distance, giving up just two earned runs and striking out four.

For WC, Olszewski was 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Kylie Nottingham added two hits with a run scored and an RBI.  Washington had 12 hits in the contest.  In the circle, Walter took the loss and falls to 9-10.

In Washington's second game of the day, the Shorewomen took on Ursinus after they fell to top seed Dickinson by a score of 2-0.

The Shorewomen netted a pair of runs in the top of the first.  Dockrill scored on a squeeze play off the bat of Kylie Nottingham.  Glascock would come around to score on a base hit down the left field line by junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park)

Ursinus (18-17) got a run back in the last of the second when Kelli Jerdan singled to center and scored Emelie McFarland.  An inning later, Jamie Miles scored Amy Gentile on an RBI groundout to short to level the score 2-2 after three frames.

The Bears took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Samantha Sinisi scored on a wild pitch to put Ursinus up 3-2.  That run would prove to be the winning run as WC in its last two trips to the plate did not advance a runner past first base.

Weber gets the win for Ursinus and is now 12-9 on the year.  She tossed a complete game, striking out six and allowed just six hits and two runs.  Kristen Gallagher had two hits for the Bears to lead all players.

For the Shorewomen, junior Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) was the hard luck loser and drops to 4-5.  She allowed just one earned run, five hits and struck out in tossing her second complete game of the year.  Olszewski had one hit in the second game and had four hits on the day.

This was the second time Washington appeared the conference tournament.  The Shorewomen also made the conference tournament in 2005.
