CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College topped visiting Ursinus College, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
The Shoremen (6-3, 3-1 Centennial) built a 3-0 lead in doubles. Senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) rolled to an 8-0 win over Dylan Marsh and Sean Kelley at No. 3. At No. 1 and No. 2, the Shoremen rallied to post a pair of 9-7 wins as juniors Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) defeated Evan Stutchin and Evan Lord at No. 1 and freshmen Nicolas Campisi (Santa Rosa, Argentina/Highland [UT]) and Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) downed Matt Hope and Brent Stevenson at No. 2.
In singles, Cranford was a 6-2, 6-2, winner over Stutchin at No. 1, while Papen beat Hope, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2. Ursinus (9-6, 0-5) picked up a point at No. 3, where Lord downed Cywinski, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8. Ellison bested Stevenson, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4, freshman Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) beat Chris Wyshock, 6-1, 4-6, 11-9, at No. 5, and Menzione blanked Marsh, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shoremen, ranked 12th in the Atlantic South region, return to action tomorrow with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match at nationally-ranked Mary Washington.
