Bears Frustrate Shorewomen Twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Nicely Homers In Game Two

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Ursinus swept a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader against host Washington College on Wednesday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field.  Ursinus won game one, 2-0, and game two, 8-1.  The Bears are now 10-10 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Shorewomen fall to 12-14 and 4-4 respectively.

The Bears would score the only runs of the game in game one in the top of the fifth inning when Samantha Lowes hit a two-out, two-run home run over the centerfield fence to put the visitors up by a 2-0 score.  In the bottom half of the frame, the Shorewomen loaded the bases with one out.  Ursinus got the second out when they forced out freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) at the plate and got the third out when Jennilyn Weber came back from a 3-0 count to strike out junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park).

Weber got the win and is 6-4 on the year for the Bears.  She struck out six, allowed six hits and only one walk in tossing her 10th complete game of 2011.

Sophomore pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) was the hard luck loser and drops to 6-6 for the Shorewomen.  She went the distance too, allowing only four hits and punching out five.  Sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) had two hits.  WC left eight on base in the game, seven of which were in scoring position.

In game two, the Bears scored six times in the top of the second to take a 6-0 lead.  Kristen Gallagher scored on a single through the left side by Kate Kehoe to put the Bears on the board.  The next batter, Kelli Jerdan hit a two-run triple to right-center to make 3-0 Ursinus.  Lowes scored on a throwing error to increase the lead to 4-0.  Allison Pfrommer tripled to right to make it 5-0 and scored on a ground ball off the bat of Rachael Vietheer for the final run of the frame.

Prfommer scored on an RBI double to left field by Jamie Miles to make it 7-0 in the top of the fourth.  Lowes singled to left-center to chase home Cassie Brown and give the Bears an eight-run lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Washington scored in the bottom of the seventh when senior Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) socked a home run to left field to give the Shorewomen their lone run of the game.

Pfrommer sparked the Ursinus attack in game two with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.  Jerdan, Kehoe and Miles all had two hits with Jerdan driving in two.  Pitching wise, Caitlin Whelan got the win and is now 4-6 on the year.  She scattered five hits and struck out six while surrendering just one run.

Dockrill was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap for WC.  Junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) took the loss and drops to 5-5.  She lasted just 3.1 innings in the contest.

The Shorewomen are back in action tomorrow afternoon versus visiting Rutgers-Camden.  First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
