Box Score 2 Dockrill Doubles Four Times To Set WC Single-Season Doubles Mark
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College split a doubleheader with visiting Rutgers-Camden on Thursday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Washington College Softball Field. The Shorewomen (13-15) topped the Scarlet Raptors (9-11) in the first game by a 5-3 score, but Rutgers-Camden came back to win game two, 3-2. In the second game, freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) set the Washington all-time record for doubles in a season when she roped her 13th double in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the first game, the Shorewomen scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to grab a quick 2-0 lead. Dockrill scored on a passed ball to put Washington up 1-0. Junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) doubled down the left field line to chase home freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to put the hosts up by two runs.
In the last of the second, the Shorewomen took a 4-0 lead when junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) doubled to right-center with two outs to score both senior Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) and freshman Kelly Ward (Baltimore, MD/Mercy).
Nicely connected on her second home run in as many games with two away in the bottom of the third inning on a solo blast to straight-away centerfield to give Washington a 5-0 lead.
Rutgers-Camden got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Gabrielle Colon scored on a wild pitch with two outs to cut the lead to 5-1. The Scarlet Raptors cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth when Kaitlyn Gaskill connected on a two-out solo home run over the left field fence.
In the top of the sixth, Rutgers-Camden trimmed the lead to 5-3 when Danielle Meng scored on a fielding error. The Scarlet Raptors had runners at second base and third base with two outs, but junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got Kelly Harper to strike out swinging to end the threat. In the seventh, the Scarlet Raptors got the tying run to the plate, but Kimme got Colon to groundout to end the opener.
Nicely went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the win for WC, while Dockrill went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Both of Dockrill's hits were two-baggers. Carbutt drove in a game-high two runs. In the circle, junior pitcher Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) tallied the victory and is now 2-3 on the year as she did not give up a hit in her four innings of work. Kimme pitched the last three innings to record her first save of 2011. Washington pitching allowed just one earned run in the contest.
For Rutgers-Camden, Mackenzie Walker took the loss and drops to 1-4. She allowed all five runs while pitching the first three frames. Sam McGreggor tossed three innings of scoreless relief for the visitors.
In game two, the Scarlet Raptors scored in the top of the first when Amanda Cassella plated Vicki D'Anduono on a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the top of the third, Brooke Keenan scored on a double to left-center off the bat of Erika Drayton to put Rutgers-Camden up 2-0.
In the bottom of the sixth Washington used a two-run, two-out rally to knot the score at 2-2. Carbutt singled to right-center to plate Dockrill to trim the lead to 2-1. Dockrill reached on her fourth double of the doubleheader and also set the single-season mark at Washington for two-baggers in a season with 13. The previous mark was 12 set by Amanda Campbell '08 in 2007. Kylie Nottingham then doubled down the left field line to score Carbutt all the way from first base to tie the contest 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, Keenan led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. She would score the game-winning run on a two-out flare single to shallow right-center off the bat of Gaskill that just went over the head of Washington sophomore second baseman Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur). In the bottom of the seventh, the Shorewomen were retired in order and the Scarlet Raptors earned the split.
Keenan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the victory to lead the Rutgers-Camden offense. Pitching wise, Cassella fired her 12th complete game of the season by striking out seven and allowing only five hits and two earned runs. She is now 8-6 on the year.
Dockrill went 2-for-3 with both of her hits being doubles giving her two doubles in both games of the twin bill and a run scored. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) took the loss and drops to 6-7. She tossed her eighth complete game of the year for Washington.
