Washington Sweeps Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College scored an important 8-1 Centennial Conference men's tennis win over visiting Dickinson this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shoremen, the 12th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, improved to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the win, while the Red Devils fell to 6-6 and 2-4 with the loss.
The Shoremen and Red Devils split 8-0 decisions at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Dickinson's Ross Anstaett and Will Golinkin were 8-0 winners against senior Kristian Wilson (Germantown, PA/home school) and freshman Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) at No. 1, but senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) were 8-0 winners against David London and Kurt Mendelson at No. 2. Junior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) gave the Shoremen a 2-1 lead in the match with an 8-4 victory against Dixon Blue and Hunter Dewing-Hommes at No. 3.
In singles, Ellison downed Mendelson, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3 and Cranford bested Anstaett, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 to extend Washington's lead to 4-1. Papen clinched the win for the Shoremen by rallying for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, win against Golinkin at No. 2.
Freshman Nicolas Campisi (Santa Rosa, Argentina/Highland [UT]) added a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6, win over Blue at No. 5, while freshman Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) was a 6-7, 7-5, 10-6, winner at No. 5. Menzione posted an 8-2 pro-set win against Ari Blask at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a 10:30 a.m. Centennial Conference match at Franklin & Marshall.
