Dockrill Sets WC Single Season Hits Record In Game Two

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College won both ends of a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader against visiting Dickinson on Saturday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field.  The Shorewomen won 4-3 in game one on a game-ending home run by freshman Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) and took game two, 8-7, in nine innings on a walk-off single by sophomore Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg).   The Shorewomen improve to 15-15 overall and 6-4 in conference play, while the Red Devils drop to 9-14 overall and 5-3 respectively.

In game one, the Red Devils and Shorewomen entered the bottom of the seventh inning tied 3-3 with Kylie Notthingham leading off the frame.  She drove a pitch by Allison Jordan over the centerfield fence to give the Shorewomen the 4-3 walk-off victory.

Washington took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when senior Becca Nicely (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) launched her third home run the last four games over the left field wall to put the hosts on the board.

Dickinson would take the lead in the top of the fifth when Kyrie Budnik cracked a three-run homer to right-center with two outs to give the Red Devils a 3-1 lead.

However in the bottom of the inning, the Shorewomen scored twice to tie it.  Kylie Nottingham socked her first home run of the game to center to cut the lead to 3-2.  WC tied it when junior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) scored on a throwing error by Dickinson following a Jordan strikeout.  The score would remain level until the second longball by Kylie Nottingham.

In the game one victory for the hosts, Kylie Nottingham was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.  In the circle, junior pitcher Meaghan Kimme (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) got the win as she tossed two scoreless innings of relief to move to 6-5 on the year.  She struck out two of the six batters she retired.  In the first game, Kimme and starting pitcher, junior Jill Piasecki (Galena, MD/Kent County) did not allow an earned run.

For the Red Devils in the opener, Bruke Mikesell went 2-for-2 with a run scored.  Allison Jordan took the loss in the circle and drops to 4-6 as she tossed a complete game for the seventh time this year.

In game two, Washington put up four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead.  Kylie Nottingham doubled to right-center scoring both freshman Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) and junior Leigh Carbutt (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) for the opening two runs of the game.  Kylie Nottingham scored on a base hit by Nicely to left to make it 3-0.  The scoring was capped when Snover scored on a single through the right side by sophomore Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) was the hard.

The Red Devils would score once in the top of the third inning on a two-out triple by Alesha Sisco to right that sent home Emma Murtaugh to cut the lead to 4-1.

Dickinson scored four times in the top of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead.  Budnik singled through the left side to score Denise Haines to trim the lead to 4-2.  With two away, Murtaugh singled up the middle to drive in a pair of runs to level the game at 4-4.  Carly Jordan would score on a throwing error to put the guests up by a run.

The score would stay that way until the bottom of the sixth when the Shorewomen scored three times with two outs to grab a 7-5 lead.  WC tied the game when sophomore Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) scored on a fielding error to knot the game at 5-5.  Dockrill, who tied the single-season mark for hits with her 53rd hit of 2011 in the sixth, would give the hosts a 6-5 lead when she scored on a throwing error.  Kylie Nottingham came in to score on a single down the right field line by Snover to put the hosts up by two runs.

Dickinson would not go quietly though as they tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh.  Madison Gerish hit a sacrifice fly to deep left that brought home Carly Jordan and it was a 7-6 WC lead.  With two away, the next hitter, Melissa Osborn doubled to left to chase in Murtaugh and the game was squared at 7-7.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dockrill singled up the middle with two outs for her 54th hit of the season to give her the single-season mark for hits by a Shorewoman.  She broke the mark of Carbutt, who had 53 hits in 2009.  WC had runners on first and second with two outs, but could not score.

In the bottom of the eighth, a perfect throw by Dickinson's Jess Haklar from center nailed Nicely at the plate and the two teams would enter the ninth inning tied at 7-7.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Dockrill doubled to left-center and would go to third base on a wild pitch.  Glascock then drove a single over the head of Haklar for the walk-off hit and it gave Washington both games of the twin bill.

In game two, Dockrill was 5-for-6 with three runs scored and set a career-best with the five hits for WC.  Nicely and Snover both had three hits each, with Nicely setting a personal high with her three baseknocks.  Glascock, Shaelan Nottingham and Kylie Nottingham all had two hits with Kylie Nottingham scoring twice.  The 19 hits for Washington is a season-best.  In the circle, Kimme got the win in relief and is now 7-5 on the year.  She tossed the final five innings, giving up only two runs and three hits.

For Dickinson, Budnik, Mikesell and Murtaugh all had two hits with Murtaugh and Carly Jordan both scoring two times.  In the circle, Liz Barry took the loss and drops to 0-4.  She pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed the walk-off run.

The Shorewomen are back in action Thursday afternoon versus visiting McDaniel in Centennial action.  First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
