McNicol and Bercovici Win at No. 2 Doubles in Loss
LUTHERVILLE, MD -- Top-seeded host Johns Hopkins University won its fifth consecutive Centennial Conference Championship with a 5-1 victory over visiting Washington College in the championship match of the conference's tournament this afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays, who are ranked ninth in Division III and third in the Atlantic South region, improve to 16-2 with the win, while the Shorewomen, who are ranked ninth in the region, finish their season at 16-4.
The match began outside at the tennis courts at Johns Hopkins, but was moved to Green Spring Racquet Club in Lutherville midway through doubles play due to rain.
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead when Abby Clark and Courtney Boger finished an 8-1 win over WC sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) at No. 3. Hailey Hogan and Nandita Krishnan, the region's top-ranked doubles team, then bested WC juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked tandem, 8-2, at No. 1. Washington got on the board when freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School) rallied from a 6-3 deficit at No. 2 to post a 9-8(9) win over Carolyn Warren and Abby Dwyer.
In singles, the Blue Jays extended their lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-1, win for Hogan, the region's 14th-ranked singles play, over Finnegan at No. 3. Krishnan, ranked fifth in the region, pulled Hopkins to within a point of the win with a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Marshall, ranked 22nd in the region, at No. 3. Ariel Several sealed the win for the Blue Jays with a 6-2, 6-0, triumph over McNicol at No. 4.
