Box Score Trees, McAuliffe Lead Offensive Onslaught
BRYN MAWR, PA -- The Washington College field hockey team tied the Centennial Conference record and broke the school record for goals in a game with a 15-1 conference win over host Bryn Mawr this afternoon.
The Shorewomen (2-4, 1-1 Centennial) matched the conference record of 15 goals set by Ursinus in a shutout win over Bryn Mawr on September 30, 2009, and matched by Swarthmore in a shutout win over Bryn Mawr on September 22, 2010. The Shorewomen's previous high for goals in a single game was 14 during a shutout win over Bryn Mawr on September 13, 2009.
Washington scored just one minute in the game as senior attack Emily Trees (Kensington, MD/Connelly School of the Holy Child) started things off. Washington held a 7-0 lead less than 14 minutes in the contest and a 10-0 lead at halftime. Bryn Mawr's (0-6, 0-1) goal came with 3:35 left in the game when Maya Steinfeld converted a penalty stroke.
Trees led the Shorewomen with three goals and two assists. Freeshman attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, MD/Glenelg Country School) scored her first three collegiate goals, while junior attack Gabby Tarbert (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and junior defender Hillary Kane (Rhinebeck, NY/Millbrook School) each scored two goals. Senior midfielder Gussie Reilly (Buck Hill Falls, PA/Mercersburg Academy) added one goal and two assists, while junior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) tallied one goal and one assist. Freshman attack/midfielder Meredith Andrews (Catonsville, MD/Seton Keough), sophomore attack Angela Parreco (Stevensville, MD/Kent County), and junior defender Erin Lewns (Fallston, MD/North Harford) each scored one goal. Andrews' goal was the first of her collegiate career. Junior midfielder Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll), freshman defender Kate Duggan (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Academy of the New Church), and freshman attack/midfielder Grace Phillips (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) each recorded one assist. For Duggan and Phillips, those assists were the first of their respective collegiate careers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) played the first 16:30 in goal for the Shorewomen and then briefly re-entered the game to face Steinfeld's penalty stroke. Freshman Brit Barr (Sykesville, MD/Century) played 53:30 in goal for the Shorewomen and made one save. Elizabeth Toft started in goal for the Owls, allowing six goals and making six saves in 11:25. Faith Westdorp made 23 saves and surrendered nine goals in the final 58:35.
The Shorewomen fired off 52 shots in the game, including 35 in the first half, to the Owls' two. Washington also recorded all 18 of the game's penalty corners.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Gettysburg.
