Box Score Junior Scores Game-Winner with 7:58 Left in Extra Period as Shorewomen Rally from Two-Goal Deficit
MADISON, NJ -- Junior defender Erin Lewns (Fallston, MD/North Harford) scored the game-winning goal with 7:58 remaining in overtime as visiting Washington College rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to post a 3-2 win over host Drew University in non-conference field hockey action tonight in Madison, NJ. Washington improved to 5-4 with its fourth consecutive win, all on the road, while Drew fell to 6-4 with the loss.
The Shorewomen recorded the first five shots of the game, but it was the Rangers who got on the scoreboard first as Angela Terracciano scored off a rebound of Drew's first shot of the contest with 16:28 to play in the first half. The Rangers took a 2-0 lead on their fourth shot of the game with 6:37 remaining in the first half when Brooke Gagliano scored off an assist from Alexandra De Sousa during a penalty corner. The Shorewomen trailed, 2-0, at halftime despite a 9-4 advantage in shots in the period.
Washington cut the lead to 2-1 with 22:38 left in the second half when junior midfielder Hilary Manion (Trappe, PA/Archbishop Carroll) scored off an assist from junior midfielder Kristen Wille (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) during a penalty corner. The Shorewomen evened things up with 6:05 remaining in regulation when sophomore attack Angela Parreco (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) scored. Washington out-shot Drew, 11-2 in the second half.
Drew's Erin Maguire recorded the first shot of overtime, sending one wide with 8:43 on the clock. Lewns scored the game-winner 45 seconds later chipping in a rebound off a shot by Wille.
The Shorewomen finished with a 22-7 advantage in shots and a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners in the game. Christiana Carlini made 12 saves in a losing effort for the Rangers, while sophomore goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, MD/Southern) made one for the Shorewomen.
Washington has now won four consecutive road games for the first time since the 2001 season. The Shorewomen's four-game win streak is also their first of any kind since the 2009 season.
The Shorewomen return to action with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game Wednesday against Swarthmore.
