Derrick Wins Individual Event for First Time
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA -- Sophomore Tad Derrick (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) won an individual event for the first time in his collegiate career as the Washington College men's swim team defeated host Elizabethtown, 119-66, in a non-conference swim meet this afternoon in Elizabethtown, PA. The Shoremen improved to 3-3 with the win, while the Blue Jays slipped to 3-4 with the loss.
Derrick captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.38, just touching out senior Johnny Helenek (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg), who finished second in 1:09.42.
Freshmen Austin Yocum (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) and Greg Lee (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) each won two individual events. Yocum was first in the 1000 freestyle in a WC season-best time of 10:51.11 and in the 100 freestyle in 52.36. Lee won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.90 and in the 100 backstroke in 58.24.
Senior Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley) won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.16 and was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:25.24. Freshman Steven Bilinski (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) took first place in the 200 butterfly in 59.93. Junior Robert Homer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 24.96, while sophomore Robert Mix (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.44 and senior Ross Mills (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) was second in the 100 butterfly in 59.94.
Bilinksi, Mills, junior Spencer Van Cise (Temple City, CA/Temple City), and Yocum won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.99.
The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Dickinson.
