Box Score Weston Hands Out Personal-Best Six Assists
GETTYSBURG, PA – Host Gettysburg broke a 44-44 tie with 13 straight points in the second half to take a 57-44 lead en route to a 83-69 win over visiting Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Bream Gymnasium in Centennial Conference men's basketball action. The Bullets improve to 10-13 overall and 7-9 in conference action, while the Shoremen drop to 13-10 and 9-7 respectively.
In the second half, WC senior guard Sal Schittino (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) canned a three-pointer to tie the game at 44-44 with 14:48 left before the Bullets scored 13 unanswered points to take a 57-44 lead with 9:53 to go in the contest on a Christian Bors jumper. The Bullets would lead by as many as 20 points at 80-60 with 3:42 left in the game on a pair of Joe Emerusabe free throws.
In the first half, the Shoremen jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opening 3:29 of the game on a three-pointer by senior guard Kevin Breslin (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti). The Bullets would score six straight points to even up the game at 14-14 with 9:36 left in the first half on a Larry Geedey layup. A Derek Brooks layup 38 seconds later put Gettysburg up 16-14 and capped an 8-0 run for the hosts. Gettysburg would take its largest lead of the first half at 34-29 with 2:11 left on a Emerusabe three-pointer. However, Washington closed the half on a 7-2 run to level the game at 36-36 at halftime as freshman guard John Weston (Atlanta, GA/Bolles School (FL) made a layup just before time expired in the first 20 minutes.
Emerusabe scored a game-high 20 points and made all 11 free throws he shot in the win. Bors added 18 points for the Bullets, while Alex Zurn scored 16 points. Bors grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while Zurn handed out seven assists to lead all players. Gettysburg held a 34-23 edge in rebounds.
Breslin scored 13 points to lead the Shoremen, while Schittino added 12 points and junior forward Tony Hawkins (Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Haddon Township) chipped in with 10 points. Weston dished out a career-best six assists.
Both teams turned it over 20 times in the contest. The Bullets scored 25 points off of turnovers, while the Shoremen scored just 14 points off of the miscues.
The Shoremen are back in action on Wednesday evening with an 8:00 p.m. game against visiting Ursinus at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference action as they seek to snap their four-game losing streak.
