Shoremen Win at All Three Doubles Spots
DANVILLE, VA -- The Washington College men's tennis team, ranked 13th in the Atlantic South region, opened its 2012 season with a 6-3 non-conference win at Averett University this afternoon.
The Shoremen swept all three doubles matches to get off to an important 3-0 lead in the match. Senior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and senior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) pulled out a 9-8(1) win over David Lembke and Jyri Hayrinen at No. 1. Freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) and sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) topped Kirill Orlov and Iliya Egorov, 9-8(5), at No. 2. Freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) defeated Andrey Yasyr and Mikhail Polyakov, 8-4, at No. 3.
In singles, Washington won at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6. Boaté beat Hayrinen, 3-6, 7-5, (retired), at No. 3, Ellison bested Polyakov, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, and senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) topped Egorov, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6. Boaté's win clinched the victory for the Shoremen.
Averett's David Lembke downed Papen, 7-5, 5-7, 10-7, at No. 1, Orlov defeated Rajes, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2, and Yasyr bested Cywinski, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 4.
The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. match at Guilford.
