Lisco Wins for Washington at No. 5 Singles
NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Host Christopher Newport, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Washington College, the region's 13th-ranked team, 6-1, in a non-conference men's tennis match this afternoon in Newport News, VA.
The Captains (3-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match by sweeping doubles. Matt King and Eric Shulman, the region's second-ranked doubles tandem, beat Washington sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-5, at No. 1. Gianandrea Heyer and Joey Manilla added an 8-6 win over seniors Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) at No. 2, while Kyle Tobin and Robbie Wagner pulled out a 9-7 win over freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) at No. 3.
In singles play, Shulman beat Papen, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1, Heyer - the region's 15th-ranked player - bested Rajes, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2, and Manilla downed Boaté, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3. Lisco picked up the Shoremen's lone point in the match with a 6-4, 6-2, victory against Tobin at No. 5. Fourth and sixth singles did not finish due to darkness.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. match at McDaniel.
