CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Bates College, the 29th-ranked team in Division III and eighth-ranked team in the Northeast Region, defeated host Washington College, 9-0, in a non-conference men's tennis match this afternoon at the Schottland Tennis Center. Bates improved to 2-4 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 3-3 with the loss.
In doubles, Matt Bettles and Rob Crampton, the Northeast's third-ranked tandem beat WC senior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and senior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg), 8-3 at No. 1. At No. 2, Pierre Planche and Timmy Berg, the Norheast's 14th-ranked duo, bested sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-4. Peter Yankofsky and Kyle DeSisto completed the doubles sweep by defeating freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), 8-3 at No. 3.
Bates extended the lead to 4-0 when Crampton finished a 6-0, 6-1, win over Boaté at No. 3 and clinched the match thanks to a 6-1, 6-0 win by DeSisto against senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) at No. 6. Bettles, ranked 13th in the Northeast in singles, followed with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Rajes at No. 2, Planche beat Ellison, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5, and Jeff Beaton bested Cywinski, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8, at No. 4. Berg, ranked fifth in the Northeast in singles, completed the 9-0 win for the Bobcats with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Papen at No. 1.
The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Franklin & Marshall.
