Lisco Clinches Victory with Win at No. 5 Singles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) recorded a 6-4, 6-4, win at No. 5 singles to clinch the match as host Washington College defeated visiting Haverford, 5-4, in Centennial Conference men's tennis action today inside the Johnson Fitness Center. The Shoremen improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win. Haverford, ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region, fell to 4-4 and 1-1, respectively.
Haverford scored the match's first point as Will Garrett and Natty Sergay beat freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), 8-4, at No. 3 doubles. The Shoremen evened the score with an 8-5 win by seniors Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) over Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein at No. 1 and took a 2-1 lead when sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) completed a 9-7 win over Matthew Cebul and Matt Romei at No. 2. Rajes and Cywinski won their final four games at No. 2 to rally for the win.
Washington increased its lead to 4-1 thanks to a 6-4, 6-0, win by Ellison over Romei at No. 3 singles and a 6-1, 7-6(2) victory for Cywinski against Andy Dougherty at No. 4. The Fords picked up their first singles win when Sergay finished a 6-4, 6-3, win over Boaté at No. 2, trimming the Shoremen's advantage to 4-2. Haverford then got to within one point when Caulfield, the region's 11th-ranked singles player, pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, three-set victory over Papen at No. 1. Lisco then completed his match-clinching win over Garrett at No. 5. Moments later, the Fords picked up their fourth point of the match with a 7-5, 6-0, victory by Cebul over Laux at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. Centennial Conference match at Muhlenberg.
