CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Swarthmore College, the 27th-ranked team in Division III and eighth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, the region's 11th-ranked team, 9-0, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
The Garnet got off to a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play. Maxwell Bressman and Max Kaye were 8-6 winners over seniors Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and senior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) at No. 1, Christian Carcione and Zak Kelm defeated sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-2, at No. 2, and Anthony Collard and Daniel Park topped freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), 8-4, at No. 3.
The Garnet clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win by Collard over Rajes at No. 3 singles and a 6-0, 6-3, win by Carcione against Washington senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) at No. 6. Preston Poon added a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Cywinski at No. 5, Kaye beat Boaté, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 4, Kelm downed Papen, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1, and Bressman bested Ellison, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, at No. 2.
The Shoremen return to action Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference home match against Salisbury.
