CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Washington College, the 11th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Salisbury University, 7-2, in a non-conference men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shoremen improved to 9-6 with the win, while the Sea Gulls fell to 9-10 with the loss.
Salisbury notched the first point of the match as Justin Smith and Adam Goldberger beat sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-6, at No. 2. Washington evened the score as freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) finished an 8-5 win over Curtis Quandt and Nick Mancuso at No. 3. The Shoremen took a 2-1 lead when seniors Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) rallied from a 5-1 deficit to post a 9-8(4) win over Daniel Barnas and Daniel Albers at No. 1, snapping a 12-match win streak for Barnas and Albers.
The Shoremen increased their lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-3, victory by Boaté over Goldberger at No. 4 singles, but the Sea Gulls narrowed the gap back to a point when Barnas completed a 6-2, 6-2, win against Papen at No. 1. A 7-6(5), 6-2, victory for Rajes over Quandt at No. 3 gave Washington a 4-2 lead and Ellison's 6-3, 6-4, triumph over Albers at No. 2 clinched the win for the Shoremen. Cywinski tacked on a 6-0, 6-0, win against Mancuso at No. 5, while senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) added a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Smith at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. Centennial Conference match at Johns Hopkins.
