Papen & Ellison Win at No. 1 Doubles
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Haverford College, the 12th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, the region's 11th-ranked team, 5-1, in the first round match of the Centennial Conference Men's Tennis Tournament this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Fords advance to the semifinal match and improved to 11-7 with the win. The Shoremen finish their season at 9-8.
Haverford won the first two doubles matches to finish as Matthew Cebul and Matt Romei rallied from a 5-2 deficit to defeat Washington sophomore Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and freshman Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-6, at No. 2 and Will Garrett and Natty Sergay beat freshman Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and graduate student Andrew Laux (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai), 8-6, at No. 3. The Shoremen picked up a point at No. 1 as seniors Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) were 8-5 winners against Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein.
Haverford extended its lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3, win by Cebul over senior Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) at No. 6 singles and took a 4-1 lead with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, victory at No. 5 by Jake Weisenthal over Cywnski. The Fords won the match when Romei completed a 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-0, win against Rajes at No. 3.
