Glascock Homers For Winning Run In Game One 5-4 Win; Fall In Game Two, 3-1

WESTMINSTER, MD – Visiting Washington College and host McDaniel split a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on the campus of McDaniel.  The Shorewomen won game one by a 5-4 score, while the Green Terror rebounded for a 3-1 win in game two.  Washington finishes the regular season 19-18 overall and 11-5 in the conference, while McDaniel concludes its regular season at 23-11 and 13-3 respectively.

With the win in game one, the Shorewomen clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference Softball Tournament for the second straight year and will travel back to McDaniel on May 5-6 for the tournament as the Green Terror clinched the top seed and the right to host with the win in game two.  Had the Shorewomen won game two, they would have clinched the top seed and hosting honors.  The Shorewomen will be the two seed as Ursinus and Gettysburg each lost on Saturday to Swarthmore and Haverford respectively.  Washington will play Gettysburg, the third seed, in the opening round of the double elimination tournament on Saturday in Westminster, MD.  Ursinus clinched the fourth spot and will play McDaniel in the opening round.

In game one, McDaniel had a runner on third base with less than two outs in each of the last half of the first two innings, but they failed to score.  The score would remain 0-0 until the top of the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, freshman Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) homered over the centerfield fence to lead off the frame to put Washington up 1-0 and it was the team's first hit of the ballgame.  The Shorewomen loaded the bases with one out and took a 2-0 when freshman Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) worked out a bases loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch and that forced home freshman Molly Gallagher (Abingdon, MD/Edgewood).  Two batters later with the bases still loaded, freshman Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) walked on a 3-2 pitch to plate sophomore Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School) to push the lead to 3-0.  The Shorewomen tacked on another run when junior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) scored on a fielding error by the Green Terror for the fourth and final run of the frame.

In the bottom of the sixth, McDaniel loaded the bases with nobody out and Tracy Davis singled up the middle to score Jordan Beans and Megan Moore to cut the Shorewomen lead to 4-2 with nobody out.  Beth Ann Fusco drew a bases loaded walk on a full count pitch to score Laura Mertz and it was 4-3 with zero outs.  Davis tied the game when she scored on an error and it was a 4-4 game. 

Glascock put the Shorewomen back up in the top of the seventh at 5-4 when she led off the inning with a home run to left field. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Green Terror loaded the bases with two outs, but Cooper got Amy Baumgardner to ground out to sophomore Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) at first base to end the game and with the victory, the Shorewomen secured a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the second straight year. 

Cooper got the win in the circle for WC and improves to 10-5 as she went the distance.  She gave up eight hits, four runs, three earned, walked six and struck out six.  Offensively, Glascock scored two runs in the win.

Caroline Brehm took the loss for the Green Terror and falls to 16-8.  She tossed a complete game too, giving up five hits and five runs, four of which were earned.  She walked four and struck out nine hitters.  Beans, Davis and Jaclyn Liebowitz each had two hits, with Davis driving in two runs.

In game two, the Shorewomen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when senior Sally Snover (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) scored on an RBI single to left off the bat of Patinella with two outs.

The Green Terror responded with three runs in the last of the third to take a 3-1 lead.  Beans smacked a double up the middle to score Lauren Fusco and Baumgardner to take a 2-1 lead with one away.  Beans would score on a two-out double to left-center off the bat of Leibowitz to give McDaniel a two-run lead.

For McDaniel, Brehm got the win and improves to 17-8 on the year.  She gave up two hits, one unearned run, walked a pair and struck out 11.  Beans had two RBI to spark the McDaniel offense as the Green Terror had five hits.

For Washington, junior pitcher Brittany Walter (Forest Hill, MD/C. Milton Wright) took the loss and drops to 2-7.

Washington and Gettysburg split a conference doubleheader on April 14 in Chestertown, MD.  The Shorewomen won game one, 9-2, while the Bullets won game two by a 7-3 score.
