Sophomore's First Collegiate Goal Gives WC Win

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Sophomore midfielder Bob Libera (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) scored the lone goal of the match 3:53 into overtime to lift visiting Washington College to a 1-0 win over host Ursinus in Centennial Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.  The Shoremen improve to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while the Bears falls to 4-6 overall and 1-3 respectively.

Libera's first collegiate goal came after an initial shot by sophomore forward Sam Draper (Centreville, MD/Queen Anne's County) hit the crossbar and he was able to gather the rebound and put it into the goal to give Washington the victory.  It was the Shoremen's first road victory in conference play since October 31, 2008 when Washington topped #10 Johns Hopkins, 1-0, in overtime, a span of 16 matches.  WC had two ties during the 16-match conference road winless streak.

In the first half, neither side could score.  The Shoremen put three shots on goal, while the Bears could only muster one shot on goal.  However, Ursinus held a 5-4 overall edge in total shots in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, both teams had three shots with WC getting all three on net, but neither side could break through and the match went to overtime scoreless.

In goal, senior goalkeeper Tyler Cabot (Hightstown, NJ/Peddie School) needed to only make one save for his third shutout of the season for the Shoremen.  Bears' goalie Kieran Keyser made six saves for the hosts.

Washington held a 9-8 edge in shots in the match, while Ursinus held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Shoremen return to the pitch on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Catholic for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match.
