Box Score Matt Wilfong Scores for Shoremen in Loss
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Host Ursinus College jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead en route to a 3-1 Centennial Conference men's soccer win over visiting Washington College this afternoon in Collegeville, Pa. The Bears improved to 7-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 6-6-1 and 0-4-1 with the loss.
Ryan Butler gave the Bears a 1-0 lead when he scored on a breakaway off an assist from Wyatt Powell at 17:23. Hans Seri added the Bears' second goal at 44:57 on a shot from outside the box to beat the halftime horn.
Butler scored his second goal of the day and eighth of the season off an assist from Ryan Molyneaux at 68:37 to increase the Ursinus lead to 3-0. Junior midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) got the Shoremen on the board with a goal at 81:59.
The Bears were opportunistic on offense in the win, scoring on all three of their shots on goal in the game. Ursinus had just five shots total in the contest, including just one - Butler's second goal - in the second half. Washington had nine shots, five of them on goal, in the game, including seven in the second half. The Shoremen also recorded all three go the game's corner kicks. The two teams combined for 39 fouls with Washington committing 21 of them and Ursinus 18.
Ursinus goalkeeper Ryan Murphy played the first 78:22 for the Bears and made one save. Daniel Cartwright played the final 11:38 and made three saves while allowing Wilfong's goal. Butler (four shots), Wilfong (three), and Washington junior forward Tyler Fernandez (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) (two) were the only players in the game from either team with multiple shots.
The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Gettysburg.
