Box Score Junior Nets All Three Washington Goals
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Junior attack Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) scored all three Washington College goals as the host Shorewomen defeated visiting Swarthmore, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference field hockey game this afternoon on KIbler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win, while the Garnet fell to 2-8 and 0-3 with the loss.
The Shorewomen scored on their first shot of the game as O'Connell deflected in a ball sent into the circle by freshman midfielder Elizabeth Davis (Earleville, Md./Bohemia Manor) with 30:22 remaining in the first half. The assist was the first of Davis's collegiate career. Swarthmore had an opportunity to tie the score when Ursula Monaghan took a penalty stroke with 6:33 remaining in the period, but senior goalkeeper Steph Harryman (Churchton, Md./Southern) made the save to keep the Garnet off the board. That save was Harryman's seventh and final stop of the first half as Swarthmore enjoyed a 13-9 advantage in shots in the period.
The Garnet found the equalizer when Audrey Allen collected a loose ball on an errant pass and scored with 28:46 remaining in the second half. O'Connell put the Shorewomen back in front when she scored in transition off an assist from junior attack Claire McAuliffe (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) with 18:38 remaining. O'Connell tacked on her third goal, this one scored from the stroke line after a feed from freshman midfielder Alli Dudley (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) with 14:16 remaining. The assist was the first of Dudley's collegiate career. Swarthmore trimmed the lead back to one goal just 21 seconds later when Nia Jones drove to the goal and scored from the right side with 13:55 left, but the Garnet could not get another shot off the remainder of the game.
The Shorewomen dominated possession in the second half and held a 22-2 advantage in shots in the period to finish with a 31-15 advantage for the game. Washington also held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners in the game.
All seven of O'Connell's team-leading goals this season have come in the Shorewomen's three home games thus far.
Harryman finished with seven saves in the contest, while Ainsley Parrish made 14 in the loss for the Garnet.
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Muhlenberg.
