Shoremen Win Consolation Game of W&L Tournament

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Pat Morgan (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) scored 19 points and junior guard John Weston (Tampa, Fla./Bolles School) added a career-best 17 to lead the Washington College men's basketball team to a 75-64 win over Cairn University in the consolation game of the Washington and Lee Basketball Holiday Tournament this afternoon in Lexington, Va. The Shoremen improved to 3-5 with the win, while the Highlanders fell to 0-9 with the loss.

The Shoremen led by as many as 11 points in the first half and took a 34-25 lead into the intermission. Washington's lead grew to 14 points near the midpoint of the second half before a 9-0 spurt by the Highlanders trimmed the margin to five points at 54-49 with 7:42 to go. The Shoremen answered by scoring the next five points, getting a lay-up and free throw from sophomore forward Dave Knox (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and a lay-up by Morgan to extend the lead to 59-49 with 6:35 to play. Washington led by at least seven points the rest of the way and saw its advantage swell to 15 points in the contest's final minute.

Morgan shot 8-for-12 from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range, en route to his 19 points. Weston's career-best 17 points came on the strength of perfect 10-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line. Weston also grabbed five rebounds, swiped three steals, and dished out three assists in the win. Senior forward Tony Hawkins (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Haddon Township) added 13 points and five boards, while freshman guard James Drury (Jenkintown, Pa./Germantown Academy) chipped in a career-best nine points in 13 minutes off the bench. Hawkins was the Shoremen's representative on the All-Tournament Team.

Reuben Lacy put game highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Cairn. Kyle Bonner added 13 points and four steals, while J.D. Zamroz scored 12 points in the loss for the Highlanders.

The Shoremen shot 44% from the field to the Highlanders' 40%. Washington held a commanding 40-26 rebounding advantage, the Shoremen's largest of the season.

The Shoremen return to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. non-conference home game against Catholic. That game will mark the first time Washington has played on its home floor since November 26th.
