Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Cooper Homers In Both Contests

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Sophomore Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) hit a home run in both games to help Washington College win its first two softball games of the 2013 season at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast Tournament on Friday at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex in non-conference softball action.  The Shorewomen topped Rutgers-Camden, 10-4, in the first game and downed William Peace, 7-2, in the second contest.  The Shorewomen are now 2-0 on the year.

Against Rutgers-Camden (0-1), the Shorewomen exploded for seven runs in the last of the first inning to take a 7-0 lead.  With the bases loaded and nobody out, Cooper launched a three-run home run to put Washington up 4-0 after Junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) had scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run.  Freshman Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) plated fellow classmate Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty) on a single to make it 5-0.  Kylie Nottingham  recorded an RBI single to drive in junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) to make it 6-0.  Senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) crossed home plate for the seventh and final run of the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk to freshman Paige Briganti (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park)

Dockrill drove in freshman Jennifer Hanner (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) on a two-bagger in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-0 and Dockrill scored on a double by Glascock to make it 9-0.

The Scarlet Raptors scored four times in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 9-4.  Christina Tamburrino scored on a throwing error to make it 9-1.  Jackie Leafey scored Katie Larson on a two-base hit to trim the lead to 9-2.  With two outs, Courtney Ray doubled home Steph Carfagno and Leafey to cap the four run outburst.

WC's Briganti scored on a RBI single by sophomore Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) to make it 10-4 in the last of the fifth and provide the final margin.

Anderson had three hits, while Dockrill, Glascock and Kylie Nottingham had two hits each.  Briganti and Dockrill scored twice and Cooper had four RBI.  In the circle, Cooper got the win and is now 1-0.  She allowed nine hits and four runs in going the distance, while striking out 11.  It was her third 10 or more strikeout effort.  Cooper did not walk a batter.

Ray, Tamburrino and Cait Eltzholtz all had two hits for the Scarlet Raptors, while Ray had two RBI.  Sam Shockey took the loss for Rutgers-Camden and drops to 0-1.

Against William Peace (1-10-1) in Game 2, the Pacers scored twice in the last of the first to take a 2-0 lead.  Heather Didinger netted an RBI single to chase home Caroline Womble from third for the game's first run.  The final run of the two-run second was Victoria Powell ground-rule double that scored Morgan Bryant from second base.

The Shorewomen scored four times in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead.  Glascock stole home to cut the lead to 2-1 and Kylie Nottingham doubled in freshman Sadie Robertson (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) to knot the game at 2-2.  Cooper then hit her second home run of the day, this time a two-run blast to also score Kylie Nottingham to make it 4-2.

The Shorewomen made it 5-2 in the top of the sixth when Glascock singled home freshman Brittany Hubbard (Hurlock, MD/North Dorchester) with two outs.  Washington tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin.

For WC in game two, Glascock had two hits and Cooper drove in two RBI to spark the offense.  Pitching wise, Anderson got her first career win and tossed her first all-time complete game in the circle.  She scattered six hits, allowed just two runs, walked two and fanned a career-best seven hitters.  The sophomore is 1-0 on the season.

Womble was 3-for-3 for the Pacers in game two to lead all players in hits.  In the circle, Heather Didinger took the loss and falls to 0-4.  She allowed five of the seven runs, four of which were earned in six innings.  She allowed eight of the squad's 11 hits and struck out three of the four batters William Peace hurlers fanned.

The Shorewomen will play Mount Saint Vincent and Eastern Mennonite at noon and 2:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon respectively.
