Diplomats Defeat Shoremen, 7-2

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Franklin & Marshall College topped host Washington College, 7-2, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Diplomats, currently ranked ninth in the Atlantic South region, improved to 3-6 overall by winning their conference opener. The Shoremen slipped to 3-3 and 1-1 with the loss. 

F&M won at the top two doubles spots as William MacArthur and Nolan Bacchieri outlasted junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 9-7, at No. 1 and Ross Silverberg and Tommy Weibye beat sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall), 8-1, at No. 2. Washington won at No. 3 as junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) were 8-6 winners over Doug Kaplan and Samuel Stone.

The Diplomats also captured five of the six singles matches. Silverberg, ranked eighth in the region in singles, beat Rajes, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, MacArthur bested Cywinski, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2, and Weibye beat Boaté, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 as F&M won the top three singles matches in straight sets. Holtschneider recorded the Shoremen's lone singles win with a 6-4, 7-6, victory over Kaplan at No. 4. F&M won the bottom two singles matches in three sets as Bacchieri beat Novick, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 5 and Alec Tunner downed Pearson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 6.

The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Haverford.
