Box Score 2 Anderson Tosses Complete Game In Game Two
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Muhlenberg swept a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader from host Washington College on Saturday afternoon. The Mules won game one, 7-2, and took game two, 4-2. The Mules improve to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while the Shorewomen fall to 13-6 and 3-3 respectively.
In game one, Washington took a 1-0 lead in the last of the first inning when with one out, senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) scored on a squeeze bunt by junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) for the game's first run.
Muhlenberg tied it at 1-1 in the top of the second inning when Alyssa Schell doubled down the left field line with one out to drive in Taylor Trifiolis. The Mules took the lead for good in the top of the third when Kelly Kline hit a line drive two-run home run over the centerfield fence with two outs to give the guests a 3-1 lead.
The Mules added two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Schell scored on a throwing error with nobody out to make it 4-1 and Jessica Costa plated Nicole Iannarone on a single to center with one away. Washington got one in the last of the fifth to cut it to 5-2 before the Mules scored twice in the top half of the seventh to provide the final margin.
Muhlenberg, which had 11 hits in game one, had three-hit performances from Kline and Schell with Kline driving in a game-high three runs. Brittany Dzieciolowski had a pair of hits for the Mules. In the circle, Kelsey Jones got the win to improve to 8-1. She went the distance, scattering three hits, allowing two earned runs, walking five and striking out four.
Glascock went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Washington. In the circle, sophomore Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) took the loss to fall to 8-3. She went three-plus innings before giving way to sophomore Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer).
In the nightcap, the Mules took a quick 1-0 lead when with two outs Kline scored on a double steal with two outs in the top of the first. The Shorewomen tied it up in their half of the first when Anderson singled to center with two away to plate Glascock.
Muhlenberg took advantage of a two-out Washington error to score twice in the top half of the second. With two outs, Nicole Iannarone scored on a fielding error to make it 2-1 and Elizabeth Sullivan came across to score on a bases loaded walk to Kline to make it 3-1.
The Shorewomen cut the lead to 3-2 in the last of fourth inning when with two outs, freshman Paige Briganti (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) delivered a two-out single to left-center to drive in freshman Jennifer Hanner (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor). However, Muhlenberg responded with a single run in the top of the sixth with two outs when Chelsea Benjamin scored on a fielding error to cap the scoring. Washington had the tying run on first base in the last of the seventh, but Muhlenberg pitcher Heather Porrini got junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) to hit a comebacker to Porrini for the final out.
Porrini got the win in relief to go to 1-1. She pitched the final four innings to pick up the victory. She allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout. Kline was 2-for-2 with a run scored, RBI and two walks to lead the Muhlenberg offense which had six hits.
For Washington, which had eight hits, Anderson and Glascock had two hits each and Glascock had four in the doubleheader. Glascock now has 97 career hits. In the circle, Anderson was the hard luck loser and drops to 4-3. She went the entire way, allowed no earned runs on six hits. She walked six and struck out a pair. The Shorewomen committed five errors in the field, leading to all four Mules' runs. Muhlenberg committed just one error.
All six runs in game two came with two outs.
Washington is back in conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Ursinus for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill in Collegeville, PA.
