CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Ursinus College defeated host Washington College, 5-4, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center. The Bears improved to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 4-6 and 2-3 with the loss.
Ursinus won the first point of the match as Tyler Arsenault and Dylan Marsh posted an 8-6 win over junior Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) and senior Andrew Pearson (Flourtown, PA/Springfield Township) at No. 3 doubles. The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 when Evan Lord and Alex Elbogen finished an 8-6 victory over sophomores Dan Boaté (West Chester, PA/Reed Henderson) and Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, MD/Perry Hall) at No. 2. The Shoremen got on the board with a 9-8(3) win by junior Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) and sophomore Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) against Evan Stuchin and Logan Metcalf-Kelly at No. 1.
The Bears' lead grew to 3-1 when Dan Boaté retired after trailing Arsenault, 3-0, in the first set at No. 3 singles. Washington tied the score at 3-3 with a 6-0, 6-3, win by Holtschneider over Elbogen at No. 4 and a 6-4, 6-4, win by Cywinski over Lord at No. 2. Stuchin put the Bears back in front with a 6-3, 6-1, win over Rajes at No. 1. Ursinus clinched the match when Metcalf-Kelly completed a 7-5, 6-1, win over Pearson at No. 6. Novick provided the final margin with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Marsh at No. 5.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Dickinson.
