Box Score 2 Patinella Drives In Career-High Five Runs In Second Game Including A Grand Slam
GETTYSBURG, PA – Visiting Washington College and host Gettysburg split a doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field in Centennial Conference softball action on Sunday afternoon. The Shorewomen took game two, 16-6, after the Bullets rallied from a 7-3 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for an 8-7 victory in game one. The Shorewomen are now 20-11 overall and 8-4 in the conference, while the Bullets are 16-14 and 6-4 respectively.
In game two, Washington scored five times in the top of the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Freshman Paige Briganti (Severna Park, PA/Severna Park) scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run. Senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) made it 2-0 when she scored on a double down the left field line by freshman Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty). Jayo would score on a fielding error to give the Shorewomen a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) doubled to right-center to plate junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) to give WC a 4-0 lead and an RBI groundout to shortstop by freshman Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) allowed sophomore Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) for the fifth and final run of the top half of the first.
The Bullets scored three times in the bottom of the first to cut the Washington lead to 5-3. Melissa Tighe came home when the Shorewomen threw out Joy Hallfors on a steal to put Gettysburg on the board. Steph Zengel scored on a wild pitch to cut it to 5-2 and on the same play Maggie Maguire came home on a throwing error to trim Washington's lead to two runs.
Washington scored twice in the top of the third inning with two outs on an RBI single through the right side by Briganti that scored freshman Jennifer Hanner (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) and an RBI base hit to left by Glascock that plated Hofstedt respectively to give the Shorewomen a 7-3 cushion.
With one out in the last of the fourth, Zengel delivered a two-run single to right field to score Tighe and Hallfors to trim Washington's lead to 7-5.
In the top of the sixth, junior Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School) registered a two-run double to left field that scored sophomore Molly Gallagher (Abingdon, MD/Edgewood) and Dockrill with two away to give the Shorewomen a 9-5 lead.
Washington scored seven times in the top of the seventh to grab a 16-5 lead. Highlighting the outburst was a one-out grand slam to center by Patinella that gave the guests an 11-run lead. In the last of the seventh, Maguire led off the frame with a home run to left-center and that gave her the Gettysburg record for career homers with 14.
For the Shorewomen, who had 19 hits in game two, Patinella went 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI. Dockrill had three runs, two hits and two RBI in the win. Briganti was 4-for-6 with two runs scored, Jayo was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Glascock was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Anderson had two runs and Mattox drove in two. The 16 runs was the most runs Washington has ever scored in a softball game versus Gettysburg and the first time the Shorewomen scored in double figures against the Bullets.
In the circle, Anderson got the win and is now 7-4. She went the first five innings to get the victory. She was relieved for the last two innings by sophomore Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) who struck out four batters and became Washington's all-time leader in strikeouts with 202, breaking the record of Diane Green '06 who fanned 201 in her career. She struck out Sam Bader for her 200th career punchout for the first out of the seventh and fanned Abby Ferguson to tie Green's mark for the second out. Cooper became the all-time strikeout leader when she got Alexa Katz looking to end the game. She has 94 strikeouts on the year and is just six away from recording consecutive 100 strikeout seasons. Cooper is the only WC hurler to strikeout 100 or more in a season.
For the Bullets, who had 15 hits in the game, Tighe was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Zengel was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Maguire was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Bader and Katz had two hits each. Pitching wise, Lindsey Treanor took the loss and falls 2-5.
In game one, the Shorewomen led 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning when the Bullets scored five times to complete the comeback in an 8-7 win. Down 7-3 and nobody out, Zengel singled to center field to plate Morgan Heinbach to cut the lead to 7-4. On the next play, a throwing error by Washington allowed Tighe and Hallfors to score and the Washington lead was cut to 7-6 with zero outs. After a pair of outs, Bader doubled to right-center as her two-bagger eluded WC centerfielder Briganti and the hit allowed Zengel to score the tying run and Maguire as the winning run.
In the last of the second inning, Maguire cracked a solo home run to center leading off the frame to put Gettysburg ahead 1-0. Washington responded with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Hilary Rosenberg (Sweetwater, NJ/Oakcrest) scored on a throwing miscue by Gettysburg to even the score at 1-1. Briganti scored on a two-bagger to center by Glascock to put Washington ahead 2-1 and she would score on a single down the right field line by Jayo to put the Shorewomen up by two runs. The Bullets tied it with a two-out, two-run home run by Zengel in the last of the third to knot the score at 3-3.
Washington went ahead in the top of the fourth with a four run top of the fourth inning to grab a 7-3 lead. Rosenberg scored on a fielding error to put the visitors ahead 4-3 and Briganti came home on a fielder's choice to give WC a two-run lead with one away. With two outs, Anderson singled home two runs with a base hit through the left side to drive in Glascock and junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to make it 7-3 and the lead would hold up until the bottom of the seventh inning.
For the Bullets, Zengel went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBI and two runs, while Maguire went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Tighe had two hits, Hallfors scored twice and Bader drove in two as Gettysburg had 10 hits. Hallfors recorded her 175th career hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to set the Gettysburg all-time hits record. In the circle, Taylor Snyder got the win and is now 4-4. She tossed three scoreless innings of relief, striking out one and surrendering just three hits.
For the Shorewomen, Briganti and Glascock both had two hits and two runs scored, while Anderson had two hits and two RBI. Rosenberg scored twice and Dockrill had a pair of hits. The Shorewomen had 12 hits in the game. Pitching wise, Cooper took the loss and drops to 11-7. She went the entire way, giving up eight runs, but only four earned, on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Shorewomen are home on Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference softball doubleheader versus Swarthmore.
