Box Score 2 First Sweep of Ursinus Since 1997 and Take Both From Bears For Just The Second Time
COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Sophomore Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) set the Washington College career mark for shutouts with her seventh all-time whitewash to spark visiting Washington College to a doubleheader sweep of host Ursinus on Tuesday afternoon at Snell Field in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader. The Shorewomen won game one, 5-0, and took game two by a 12-4 score in five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Shorewomen improve to 15-6 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial, while the Bears fall to 8-10 and 3-3 respectively.
It is the first time Washington has swept Ursinus in a doubleheader at Ursinus and just the second time the Shorewomen have taken both from the Bears, the other coming in 1997.
In game one, Cooper fired her program best sixth blanking of the season in a 5-0 victory. The Shorewomen took the lead for good with two outs in the top of the first inning when freshman Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty) doubled to centerfield to plate junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to grab a 1-0 lead.
Washington scored twice in the top of the second with two away when senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) doubled in both sophomore Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) and senior Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) to put WC up 3-0. In the top of the fourth, Jayo capped the scoring in the top of the fourth with two outs that scored Shaelan Nottingham and Glascock.
Cooper went the distance as she scattered three hits, walked two and struck out eight to set the school mark for career blankings to improve to 9-3. At the plate, Jayo was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Shaelan Nottingham was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Kylie Nottingham, freshman Paige Briganti (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) all had two hits, while Glascock drove in two runs. Washington had 14 hits in game one.
For Ursinus, Kelly Schymanski took the loss and drops to 4-5.
In game two, the Shorewomen scored three times to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Glascock scored on a one out double to right by Kylie Nottingham and Kylie Nottingham would come around to score on a Jayo two-bagger to right. Jayo scored with two away on a Dockrill single to right for the third and final run.
The Bears got onto the scoreboard with in the bottom half of the first. Schymanski singled up the middle with one away to score Amy Gentile with one away to cut the lead to 3-1 and Schymanski would score on a fielding error by Washington to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Shorewomen busted the game open with nine runs in the top of the third to take a 12-2 lead. Dockrill singled through the left side to send home freshman Jennifer Hanner (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) for the first run to make it 4-2 with nobody out. Patinella would single through the right side to plate sophomore Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) to give WC a three-run lead. Shaelan Nottingham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Dockrill and put the guests ahead 6-2. Cooper scored on a single by Briganti to left to put Washington ahead 7-2 and Glascock hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Patinella to give the Shorewomen a six-run lead. With one out, junior Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School) scored on a fielder's choice to make it 9-2. Briganti scored on a single through the left side by Anderson to push the lead to 10-2. The scoring was capped by a two-run Cooper single that scored Jayo and freshman Brittney Hubbard (Hurlock, MD/North Dorchester) to give Washington a 10-run lead.
Ursinus scored two in the last of the fifth to cut it to 12-4, but the game ended due to the eight-run rule.
Washington, which had 15 hits in the second contest, got two hits each by Anderson, Briganti, Cooper, Dockrill, Jayo and Patinella. Cooper, Dockrill and Kylie Nottingham each drove in two, while Jayo scored twice. Glascock drew a pair of walks. In the circle, Anderson got the win and improves to 5-3 as she went the entire way.
For Ursinus, which had eight hits, Schymanski and Allison Pfrommer had two hits each. In the circle, Zoe Heinke took the loss and drops to 4-4.
The Shorewomen travel to Widener tomorrow night for a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m.
