Shorewomen and Cardinals Split Softball Doubleheader

Kylie Nottingham and Rosenberg Each Homer In Game Two

WASHINGTON, DC – Visiting Washington College and host Catholic split a non-conference softball doubleheader on the campus of Catholic University of America on Wednesday afternoon.  The Shorewomen took game two in eight innings by a 7-6 score after the Cardinals won game one, 9-1, in five innings due to the eight-run rule.  The Shorewomen are now 23-14 on the year, while the Cardinals are 17-15.

In game two, the Shorewomen trailed 6-5 going into the top of the seventh inning when with two outs in junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) singled to left field to score freshman Paige Briganti (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) to knot the game at 6-6.  In the top of the eighth with one out, freshman Jennifer Hanner (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) scored on an error to put the Shorewomen up 7-6 and proved to be the winning run.

Catholic jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, scoring a two runs each in the bottom of the second and third innings.  The Shorewomen scored four times in the top of the fourth inning to even the game at 4-4.  Highlighting the four-run outburst was a three-run home run to left fieldby junior Hilary Rosenberg (Sweetwater, NJ/Oakcrest) with one out to tie the ballgame.  It was her first career longball.

The Shorewomen took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth with one out when junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) socked a solo home run to left to put the guests ahead.  Catholic retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth at 6-5.  Courtney Burke put the Cardinals ahead with two outs on a single to center that scored Christy Sanchez.

For Washington game two, Rosenberg was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Dockrill, Kylie Nottingham and freshman Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty) each had two hits as WC had 10 hits.  In the circle, freshman Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) got the win in relief and is now 3-1.  She tossed the last five innings, giving up just a pair of unearned runs on four hits.

For Catholic, which had 10 hits in the second game, Rose Shaver went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Tori Marcavage went 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Burke was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.  Victoria Capozucca got the loss and drops to 6-5 as she pitched the eighth inning.

In game one, the Shorewomen scored first in the top of the first inning with one out when senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) came around to score on a double to left-center by junior Kylie Nottingham.  The Cardinals responded with three runs in the last of the first to take a 3-1 lead.  Amy Laughner scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1.  Sanchez drew a bases loaded walk to plate Mel Galella and it was 2-1 Cardinals with nobody out.  The third run of the frame came when Rose Shaver scored on a groundout off the bat of Morgan Geiser

Catholic scored in the bottom half of the second with one out when Galella scored on a groundout off the bat of Shaver to make it 4-1.  The hosts would salt the game away with a five-run bottom of the fifth to end the game due to the eight-run rule.  The game was ended with a two-run double down the left field line with two outs by Shaver to score Monica Peters and Laughner to end the first game.

For Catholic, Shaver had four RBI, while Galella had two hits and two runs scored.  Laughner scored twice, while Burke and Taylor Stockinger had two hits each as the team had nine hits.  In the circle, Capozucca got the win and is now 6-4 as she allowed just one run on four hits in five innings.  She struck out three.

For the Shorewomen, sophomore Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) took the loss and falls to 9-6.  She pitched the entire game for Washington.  The team had just four hits.

The Shorewomen travel to McDaniel for the regular season finale in Centennial Conference action beginning at 1:00 p.m.
