CHESTER, PA -- The Washington College softball team scored a combined 29 runs and hit five home runs, including two grand slams in a non-conference double-header sweep of host Widener tonight in Chester, PA. The Shorewomen (17-6), won the first game, 17-6, in six innings, and took the second game, 12-5. Washington's win in the opener broke a 13-game losing streak to the Pride (6-12), giving the Shorewomen their first win in the series since taking the opener of a 2006 double-header, 5-4.
In the opener, the Shorewomen scored three runs with two outs in the top of the first, the third on an RBI double by sophomore Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Co/Lewis-Palmer) to jump in front. Widener got two of those runs back in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Carissa Harris. Washington scored three more runs in the top of the third, including two on a home run by freshman Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty), to extend the lead to 6-3. The Shorewomen had another three-run inning in the fifth as junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) hit a two-run homer and senior Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) hit an RBI single to make it 9-3. Harris hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 9-4.
Washington senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) recorder her 100th career hit on a bunt single in the top of the sixth. Washington would score eight runs in that frame. Kylie Nottingham hit an RBI single, Glascock scored on an error, and junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) hit an RBI double to account for the first three runs of the inning. Sophomore Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, MD/Maryvale Prep) then hit a pinch-hit grand slam before Kylie Nottingham ended the barrage with an RBI double. Widener scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to provide the final margin.
Kylie Nottingham finished game one 3-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored in the opener. Glascock scored four runs, while Jayo had three runs scored and two RBI. Glascock scored four times in the win. Sophomore Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) got the win, allowing only two earned runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out eight batters in six innings. Harris finished the opener 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored for Widener.
In the nightcap, Jayo hit a two-run home run to put the Shorewomen in front, 2-0, in the top of the first inning, but a bases loaded walk by Jamie Williams and a two-run single by Christine Mattis put Widener ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the frame. The Shorewomen evened the score in the top of the second on an RBI double by Patinella. The Pride went back in front, 5-3, in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Casey Hargadon. Washington retook the lead in the top of the fifth, plating four runs on a grand slam by Kylie Nottingham, another when Anderson scored on a wild pitch, another when Dockrill scored on a wild pitch, and another on an RBI single by Glascock to build a 10-5 advantage. Washington tacked on two more runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Kylie Nottingham and an RBI ground out by Jayo.
