Shorewomen Freeze Red Devils In Doubleheader Sweep, 3-1 and 10-1

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Junior Lauren Dockrill (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) set the program record for career doubles as Washington College swept Dickinson in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  The Shorewomen down the Red Devils, 3-1, in game one and took game two, 10-1, in six innings due to the eight-run rule.  The Shorewomen are now 19-6 overall and 7-3 in the conference, while the Red Devils drop to 9-15 and 2-6.

Dockrill now has 38 career doubles for Washington as she broke the record that was previously held by Kim Proctor '08 who had 36.  Dockrill came into the twinbill with 35 career two-baggers and had three in the doubleheader.

In game one, the Red Devils scored first in the top of the fourth inning when Grace Edelson hit a one-out solo home run to take a 1-0 lead.  The Shorewomen tied it in the last of the fourth when Dockrill with one out doubled to score freshman Sadie Robertson (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) to tie the game at 1-1.  For Dockrill, she tied Proctor for the doubles record on this hit with 36.  

Washington would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth when with nobody out senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) tripled to score freshman Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and freshman Paige Briganti (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) to make it 3-1.

The Red Devils had two on with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but sophomore pitcher Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) got Becca Garlinger, the potential go-ahead run, to pop out to senior Shaelan Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) at second base to end the game.

Cooper got the win in the circle as she went the distance, allowing only two hits, walking one and striking out four to improve to 11-3 on the year.  For Dickinson, Chelsea Homa took the loss and falls to 5-6.  She went the entire way, allowing four hits, three runs, two earned, walking five and fanning seven.

In game two, Dickinson took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Nicole Piet with two outs doubled home Edelson.  In the last of the second, Dockrill doubled with one out to become Washington's all-time leader in doubles as she recorded her 37th. 

Washington took control of the second contest with five runs in the last of the third to take a 5-1 lead.  With one out, junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) doubled home freshman Jennifer Hanner (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) to tie the game at 1-1.  The Shorewomen took the lead for good when freshman Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty) scored Glascock on a single to put WC ahead 2-1.  Kylie Nottingham scored on an error to make it 3-1.  Sophomore Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, CO/Lewis-Palmer) tripled home both Jayo and Dockrill to make it 5-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, WC scored three more times to take an 8-1 lead, all three scores coming with two away.  Jayo singled in Glascock to make it 6-1 and Dockrill recorded her third and final double of the twinbill to score Kylie Nottingham and Jayo to give WC a seven-run lead.

Two innings later with one out, Kylie Nottingham ended the doubleheader with a two-run home run with one out to also plate Briganti to end game due to the eight-run rule.

For Washington in game two, Anderson, Briganti, Dockrill, Jayo and Kylie Nottingham all had two hits as Washington had 10 hits.  Kylie Nottingham had three runs scored and three RBI, Jayo had two runs and two RBI, while Anderson and Dockrill each plated a pair.  In the circle, Anderson got the win in the circle and is now 6-3 as she went the final three innings.

For Dickinson, Edelson had two hits as the team had five.  In the circle, Cassie Blyler took the loss to fall to 2-6.

Washington travels to seventh-ranked Salisbury tomorrow afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference softball doubleheader.
