Jayo With Two RBI In Game Two

SALISBURY, MD – #7 Salisbury's Paige Knussman hit a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the eighth in game two of the doubleheader to give host Salisbury a 3-2 win over visiting Washington College at SU Softball Field on Sunday afternoon in non-conference softball action.  The Sea Gulls took game one, 11-3, in six innings due to the eight-run rule.  The Sea Gulls with the twinbill sweep improve to 24-2 on the year, while the Shorewomen drop to 19-8.  The Shorewomen had their six-game win streak snapped in the doubleheader.

In game two, Salisbury's Harley Hill was placed on second base in the bottom of the eighth inning due to the international tie breaker rule.  She was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Alpaugh and the bases were loaded due to two intentional walks.  Knussman hit the 0-2 pitch into left field to score Hill for the game-winning run and give Salisbury the 3-2 win.

Washington scored twice in the top of the third on a two-out single up the middle by freshman Jaclyn Jayo (Peoria, AZ/Liberty) that scored freshman Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and Glascock to put WC up 2-0.

The Sea Gulls would tie it in the bottom of the fourth when Hannah Mills cracked a two-run home run to left to score Michelle Gravdahl ahead of her with nobody out to knot the game at 2-2.  The score would not change until the last of the eighth.

Mills and Knussman each had two hits in the second game and Mills plated two of the three runs, while Knussman drove in the third.  Salisbury had seven hits in the win.  In the circle, Rachel Johnson got the win in relief to go to 15-1 on the year as she allowed one hit in the last four innings with six strikeouts.  She did not walk a batter or allow a run.

Sophomore pitcher Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, MD/Sussex Central) took the loss and falls to 11-5 on the year for Washington.  She went the distance, 7 1/3 innings, allowing only seven hits, three runs, walking two and fanning two.  Jayo had both RBI for the Shorewomen.

In the first game, Salisbury broke the scoreless tie in the last of the fourth inning with two outs when Lindsay McCabe doubled to left-center to score Mills to make it 1-0.  In the bottom of the fifth, Gravdahl made it 4-0 with one away when she connected on a three-run home run to left-center.  Mills would make it 5-0 when she scored on a single up the middle by Lindsay Brown.

Washington cut the 5-0 lead down to two runs with a three-run top half of the sixth.  The Shorewomen got onto the board with nobody out when junior Kylie Nottingham (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) singled through the left side to drive in freshman Paige Briganti (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) to cut the lead to 5-1 and senior Lindsey Glascock (Glenwood, MD/Glenelg) stole home with one out to trim the deficit to 5-2.  With two away, Kylie Nottingham scored on a throwing error to trim the Salisbury lead to 5-3.

In the bottom of the sixth Salisbury scored five times to end the game.  Rachel Spadin came home on a single down the left field line by Hill to make it 6-3 and then Hill won an 11-pitch at bat by launching a grand slam down the left field line to make it 10-3 with one out.  With two outs, McCabe ended the game when she singled to left to drive in Meredith Blades to make it 11-3 and end the game due to the eight run rule.

For Salisbury, Johnson got the win and improves to 14-1 on the season as she struck out a career-high 15 batters.  She gave up two hits, three runs, two earned and walked three.  At the plate, Mills was 2-for-4 with four RBI and scored three runs and Gravdahl was 2-for-3 with three RBI and scored twice.  Alpaugh was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  The Sea Gulls had 11 hits in game one.

For Washington, Cooper took the loss and drops to 11-4 as she went the first 4 1/3 innings.  She gave up four of the 11 runs.

Washington returns to action on Thursday afternoon when it hosts #17 Rowan at 3:00 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader.
