Box Score Matt Wilfong Scores for Shoremen
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Host Washington College and visiting McDaniel College played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a Centennial Conference men's soccer game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Shoremen (5-3-1, 0-1-1 Centennial) held an 8-5 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal in the scoreless first half.
Washington did not take a shot in the second half until junior midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) netted the game's first goal on a blast from 20 yards out in an unsettled situation at 63:19. McDaniel (6-1-2, 0-1-1) evened the score on a quick strike by Shane McCracken after he received a cross from Luis Calderon at 72:46. The goal was McCracken's Centennial Conference-leading 11th of the season. Neither team could find the back of the net in the remained of regulation. McDaniel held a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal in the second half.
Each team had two shots in the first overtime, with McDaniel's Andrew Hofmeister recording the only shot on goal of the period at 98:24. Washington freshman midfielder Dimitri Kaliakin (Landenberg, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) sent a free kick just over the crossbar at 99:32 for the final shot of the first overtime.
Jim Caulfield took the first shot of the second overtime for McDaniel, sending the ball just wide of the goal at 100:47. Edgar Escobar then rang a free kick off the crossbar at 104:51. Kaliakin took the Shoremen's first shot of the second overtime at 105:53. McCracken took the final shot of the game when he headed a ball that was stopped by Washington sophomore goalkeeper David Myers (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) at 109:08.
McDaniel finished the game with a 16-14 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Green Terror committed 27 fouls and the Shoremen 16 in a physical contest. Myers made five saves for the Shoremen, while Zach Nibbelink made four stops for the Green Terror.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Haverford.
