Sea Gulls Break Through in Second Half for 2-0 Win Over Shoremen

Box Score

Myers Makes Six Saves in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Salisbury University men's soccer team used a pair of goals in the final 22 minutes to post a 2-0 win over host Washington College in a battle between Eastern Shore rivals tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Sea Gulls improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 1-1 with the loss.

Possession was nearly even in a scoreless first half, with the Shoremen tallying five shots to only two for the Sea Gulls. Both of Salisbury's shots were off goal, while the Shoremen put three on goal. The Shoremen had the best scoring chance of the half in the 37th minute when senior midfielder Keegan Fisher (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) sent a textbook ball booming high into the box where senior forward George Gabriel (Cambridge, England/Hinchingbrooke School) headed the ball toward the goal, but it was saved by Salisbury goalkeeper Drew Staedeli

Salisbury controlled play throughout much of the second half as the Sea Gulls had a number of strong scoring chances, but strong play from sophomore goalkeeper David Myers (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and the Shoremen defense, along with an offside call on an apparent goal in the 60th minute, kept the game scoreless. The Shoremen had a great scoring chance of their own in the 65th minute as junior forward Joseph Fili (Sparks, Md./Loyola Blakefield) had the ball in the middle of the box, but sent a ball just wide of an open Salisbury goal.

The Sea Gulls finally broke through at the 68:12 mark when Myers saved a shot by Elliot Crompton, but could not control the ball. Adam Quigley took advantage and buried the ball into the back of the net from point-black range. Salisbury added its second goal when Crompton headed in a corner kick from Brad Martinelli at 80:04.

Salisbury finished the game with a 14-11 advantage in shots, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half. The Sea Gulls also enjoyed a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, including a 6-1 advantage in the second half.

Staedeli made four saves in the win for Salisbury. All six of the saves made by Myers came in the second half.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Valley Forge Christian.
