Shoremen Off to Best Start to Season in 18 Years

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Washington College men's swim team won its fifth straight dual meet - its longest win streak in 14 years - with a 130-51 non-conference victory over host Elizabethtown today to improve to 5-1 on the season for the first time in 18 years.  Elizabethtown fell to 2-8 with the loss.

The Shoremen spread around the individual first-place finishes in the meet as six different Shoremen won individual races. Sophomore Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) was the only Shoreman to win two, taking the 200 individual medley in 2:06.36 and the 100 freestyle in 51.03. Junior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) won the 100 backstroke in 58.07 and was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:09.60. Freshman Brent Hochstein (Townsend, Del./Salesianum School) won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.19, sophomore Eric Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lebanon Valley) won the 50 freestyle in 23.49, junior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) won the 100 butterfly in 55.01, and freshman Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) captured the 500 freestyle in 5:04.22.

Sophomore Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J../Northern Highlands Regional) placed second in both the 200 freestyle in 1:54.57 and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.33. Sophomore DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) was second in the 1000 freestyle in 11:03.83, freshman Jason Mercando (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) took second in the 500 freestyle in 5:22.56, and freshman Danny Furman (Glen Arm, Md./Calvert Hall) finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.78.

The Shoremen's fifth straight dual-meet win represents their longest win streak since winning six straight during the 1999-2000 season. Their 5-1 start to the season is their best since winning eight of their first nine dual meets during the 1995-96 season.

The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 2:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet against Dickinson.
