Shoremen Beat Garnet for First Time Since 2001

Washington Rolls to Seventh Straight Dual-Meet Win by 139-66 Final

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The host Washington College men's swim team rolled to its seventh consecutive dual meet win with a 139-66 Centennial Conference win over visiting Swarthmore tonight inside Casey Swim Center. The victory was the first for the Shoremen (7-1, 3-1 Centennial) over the Garnet (4-3, 2-2) in nearly 14 years.

Washington won 10 of the meet's 11 events, starting things off with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay by sophomore Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), sophomore Eric Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lebanon Valley), junior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and sophomore Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) in 1:38.75. They also closed out the meet with a relay win as Lee, junior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), sophomore DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall), and Longenecker won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.02.

Yocum, freshman Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), and freshman Brent Hochstein (Townsend, Del./Salesianum School) each won two individual events. Yocum won the 200 freestyle in 1:46.81 and the 100 freestyle in 48.30, while Elliott won the 1000 freestyle in 10:16.99 and the 100 backstroke in 54.22. Hochstein won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.27 and the 200 individual medley in 1:59.84. In the latter event, he lowered his own best time, which had already ranked him as the Shoremen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in the event.

Sophomore Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J../Northern Highlands Regional) won the 500 freestyle in 5:00.34 and was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:01.93. Lee won the 100 butterfly in 53.04, while Longenecker, Burcin, and freshman Jason Mercando (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) each finished second in one individual event. Longenecker was second in the 50 freestyle in 22.73, Burcin was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.48, and Mercando was second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:36.56.

With the win, the Shoremen matched their second-longest winning streak in team history. The Shoremen won seven straight dual meets during the 1995-96 season, one year after winning eight in a row to start the 1994-95 season. Washington's most recent win over Swarthmore prior to tonight was a 103-97 victory on February 7th, 2001.

The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m., Centennial Conference meet at Ursinus.
