KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Washington College sailing team finished eighth of 18 teams at the Moody Trophy, hosted by the University of Rhode Island this weekend, topping four nationally-ranked teams in the process.
In A Division, senior skipper Ryan Bailey (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and sophomore crew Karlyn Long (Louisville, Colo./Fairview) placed eighth. Bailey and Long finished in the top five in four of the ten A Division races, winning race 2A.
Washington was 11th in B Division. Junior skipper Eric Siegel (Kilmarnock, Va./Christchurch School) and sophomore crew Matt McDermaid (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) sailed the first six B Division races, senior skipper Eleanor Conroy (West Dennis, Mass./Tabor Academy) and junior crew Alex Crawford (Annapolis, Md./Severna Park) sailed the next two, and Siegel and freshman crew Lindsey Arnstein (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) sailed the final two. Washington's top B Division finish came from Siegel and Arnstein, who placed fourth in race 9B.
Sixth-ranked Roger Williams won the Moody Trophy, followed by fourth-ranked Dartmouth in second and top-ranked Yale in third. Washington finished ahead of 10th-ranked Tufts (10th), eighth-ranked Harvard (11th), 12th-ranked St. Mary's (13th), and 19th-ranked Connecticut College (16th).
The Washington College sailing team is slated to compete at the Ocean County Fall Open next weekend.
