Box Score Davis Registers Goal and Assist; Bodmer Chalks Up Defensive Save
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting #6 Ursinus got out to a 3-1 lead and held off a late charge from host Washington College to record a 3-2 victory on Thursday afternoon at the WC Upper Bermuda Field in a Centennial Conference field hockey game. The Bears improve to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen drop to 11-3 and 4-3 respectively.
The Bears got onto the scoreboard just 7:50 into the game when Stephanie Cooper scored from about eight yards out as her shot went off the blocker of Washington junior goalie Sadie Robertson (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and into the left side of the cage for her fourth goal of the year. The Shorewomen would tie it at the 24:25 mark of the first half when a blast by sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Davis (Earleville, Md./Bohemia Manor) hit the inside of the left post and into the goal to level the game at 1-1 off of a penalty corner. Notching the assist was sophomore midfielder Allison Remenapp (Woodbine, Md./Century) who took the corner. Ursinus would regain the lead for the rest of the game just under seven minutes later when Amber Steigerwalt redirected a pass from Megan Keenan into the goal from the goal mouth area to put the visitors ahead 2-1 with 6:49 remaining in the first half.
In the second half, Ursinus took its lone two-goal lead of the day 7:54 into the second when Keenan found Danielle Stong at the left post and Stong dunked the ball into the cage to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. The Shorewomen would take advantage of a penalty corner to cut the lead back to one at 3-2 with 10:19 left when junior defender Jordan Mitchell (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) tipped in a feed off the stick of Davis. The hosts had nearly tied the game with 5:39 left on a shot by sophomore attack Jennifer Tordella (New Castle, Del./William Penn), but her shot was stopped on a defensive save by Jordan Miller of Ursinus. The last chance for the hosts came with 4:06 left on a Davis shot, but her shot was blocked and the Bears were able to run out the clock.
Ursinus held a 16-9 advantage in shots, but Washington outshot the Bears in the second half by an 8-7 count. On penalty corners, the Bears had a 17-7 edge. In goal, Danielle DeSpirito had two saves for the Bears in addition to Miller's defensive save. For the Shorewomen, Robertson matched her career-high in saves with six and senior defender Emily Bodmer (Laurel, Md./Elizabeth Seton) notched her first career defensive save.
Washington hits the road on Saturday to play at #5 Franklin & Marshall at 1:00 p.m. in Centennial Conference action.
