KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- The Washington College sailing team finished seventh of 20 teams at the Kings Point Dinghy Open, hosted by Merchant Marine, held yesterday and today. Washington was fifth in A Division and seventh in B Division.
Ten races sailed in each division in favorable conditions on Saturday as a north-northwest breeze of 8-11 nots picked up and shifted west-southwest during the afternoon. Sunday morning saw the 11th A Division race sailed in 13-20 knots of west-northwest wind. During race 11B, winds gusted to over 25 knots. Sailors were able to complete a 12th race in each division, but the wind did not let up and multiple capsizes resulted in an early end to the regatta.
Senior skipper Ryan Bailey (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and freshman crew Lindsey Arnstein (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) sailed in the 10 Saturday A Division races for, while junior skipper Eric Siegel (Kilmarnock, Va./Christchurch School) and sophomore crew Matt McDermaid (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) sailed the two A Division races to be completed Sunday. Bailey and Arnstein finished in the top five in seven of their 10 races, while Siegel and McDermaid added a third-place finish in race 12A.
Senior skipper Eleanor Conroy (West Dennis, Mass./Tabor Academy) and junior crew Alex Crawford (Annapolis, Md./Severna Park) sailed Saturay's 10 B Division races, while sophomore skipper Alex Smith (Wantagh, N.Y./General Douglas MacArthur) and Crawford sailed Sunday's two B Division races. Conroy and Crawford won race 9B and were fourth in races 6B and 10B.
Thirteenth-ranked St. Mary's won the Kings Point Dinghy Open, followed by 17th-ranked Old Dominion in second and Merchant Marine in third. Washington finished 25 points better than 19th-ranked Hobart/William Smith, which claimed eighth place.
The Washington College sailing team will compete at the War Memorial, the MAISA Fall Co-Ed Dinghy Championships, next weekend at New York Maritime.
