Box Score Draper and Wilkinson Score 57 Seconds Apart In The Second Half To Rally From 2-0 Deficit
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Visiting Washington College rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit with a pair of second half goals to earn a 2-2 draw with host McDaniel at the Green Terror Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference men's soccer match. The Shoremen are now 4-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the Centennial, while the Green Terror are 6-4-1 and 1-2-1 respectively. For the Shoremen, the tie snaps a five-match losing streak at McDaniel.
The Green Terror got onto the board at the 34:30 mark when Shane McCracken found Kerry Shutt for the contest's opening goal. The hosts would make it 2-0 with 1:47 to go in the first half when McCracken converted a penalty kick following a handball by the Shoremen in the box.
In the second half, a pair of goals by the Shoremen in a 57-second span knotted the match at 2-2. Senior forward Sam Draper (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) got the Shoremen onto the board with 22:56 left in the second half off of a feed from sophomore midfielder Dimitri Kaliakin (Landenburg, Pa./Salesianum School (Del.) on the restart and with 21:59 to go, sophomore Brian Wilkinson (Sykesville, Md./Mount St. Joseph) leveled the contest on a shot from the right side with Kaliakin recording his second helper in the 57-second span. The Shoremen had a chance for the winner with 2:59 left in regulation, but the shot by freshman back Michael Holowesko (Nassau, Bahamas / Asheville School (N.C.) clanged off the crossbar.
In the first overtime, the only shot attempted was by Washington's Kaliakin and that went wide 3:39 into the 10-minute session.
The Shoremen had the opening shot of the second overtime just 59 ticks in, but the shot by sophomore forward Chris Lewandowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) sailed high. The Green Terror got their first shot of overtime at the 106:03 mark by Sean Foley, but his shot went high. It was the first shot by the hosts in over 40 minutes. McDaniel had the first shot on target in the extra time with just 1:22 remaining by Edgar Escobar, but his shot was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper Jon Wendeborn (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon).
In goal, Wendeborn made a career-high eight saves for WC, seven of which came in the first half when the Green Terror had 15 shots, while McDaniel's Nick Over made four saves. One of Over's saves came on a penalty kick attempt by Washington senior midfielder Matt Wilfong (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) at the 63:59 mark.
McDaniel held an 18-16 edge in shots and had seven of the nine corner kicks in the match.
The Shoremen return to action next Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in a Centennial Conference match with visiting Muhlenberg.
